MG TD TF 1500 - Transmission remote anti-rattle plunger 51 TD
Hello group, I just had my transmission rebuilt and after replacing the anti-rattle plunger Mosst part #443-030 the cap #443-020 no longer screws all the way down. Is this normal or is the plunger too long. The copper washer under the cap now serves no purpose and will probably just be something to rattle. Thanks for any input Rich |

Rich, I had to rebuild my shifter housings, and actually just finished assembling one. I have not experienced the problem you bring up here. I wonder if your housing was re-bushed and not drilled for the plunger to go through so it rides on the shaft? I haven't bought a cap or plunger button from Moss lately and I can't remember where my combination of parts were sourced, but my plungers fit in the cap and can be pushed all the way in without the spring. NOTE: I know because I remember checking one before and had a hard time getting the plunger out of the cap when it fit a little tight. I assume you don't have the worn parts to compare with the new. |

Richard I did have the housing re-bushed but it has been drilled out to go all the way through and luckily I do have the old original plunger but it is worn to nothing so not much to compare. I guess I should just file it down until it fits. Here is a pic. of the gap. Thanks for the input! Rich ![]() |

I wonder if the cap will fully seat without the spring and plunger? |

Richard, the cap will screw on by itself or with just the plunger but not with the spring so I am going to file a radius in the bottom of the plunger to match the shifter shaft. Maybe that will lower it down enough for everything to screw down. |

If the cap will seat with the plunger, but not with the spring then it seems to me that the spring may be the problem. If the spring is too long, it will only collapse until it becomes coil bound and not any more. Possibly someone mixed it up with a gearbox cover spring for the shifter shafts (I think they are longer). My spring for the cover plunger measures 5/8" in length (not compressed). |

Thanks Richard, I will check that measurement tomorrow. |

One more input to retract my comment about possible swapped springs--- After more research, I believe the gearbox cover springs are way too long to have been swapped. |
