MG TD TF 1500 - Transmission Remote Control

I am having trouble finding a gasket that fits between the transmission and the remote control housing that fits. I had two different Moss gaskets #294-100 that in each case is about 3/16" too small. Has anyone else had similar results? What is a better source? This is for a 53 TD. I've search the archives and found nothing so I wondering if I've gone bonkers.

thanks so much

Make one. Cut the rough shape and gently trace the outline with a ball peen hammer. Sharpen the edge of a plumbing fitting of the appropriate size and punch clean holes.

For the faint of heart - rub the edge of the casting through the paper with a pencil.

Thanks,
That's the plan if nothing on shelf. It's such a pain when something as simple as a gasket is wrong.

Mr. Brown:

If I remember correctly, the gasket set that I ordered from Moss 2 - 3 years ago included a note stating that the thin paper gaskets should be soaked in water for a period of time prior to installation. I did that with the gaskets that I have installed on my engine and when they didn't fit (i.e. were too small) - I did the soaking thing and that helped. I would assume (perhaps incorrectly?) that the same would be true for the transmission gasket sets?

You might want to contact Moss thru their website - I have found them both knowledgeable and quick to respond when I've had questions.

Hope this helps.

Bill,

If you make up a Gasket from Nitrile Rubber Sheet it will assist in cutting down vibration/noise from the Gearbox and up into the the Remote Control Unit. Also, unlike the paper Gasket which can easily tear when the Remote Control is ever removed, the Nitrile is tough and reuseable.

It has been suggested to soak paper gaskets in water for many years. It really does expand them. George

Bill -

All of my three or four remote gaskets from Moss had the same misfit problem that you have.

I photocopied my remote to a PDF file. When I need a new gasket, I print the PDF and use it as a pattern to cut a new gasket. Perfect fit every time.

Link to the PDF on my Google Drive ...
http://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxisXBEpc-IWUjR0Y1ljVFZOeUU/view?usp=sharing

Download the file by clicking the "download" button ... downward pointing arrow with a bar across the tip. Then print at "full size", "100%", "no scaling."

Staple the printed PDF to a piece of gasket paper around the outside and inside of the pattern. Cut through the PDF into the gasket paper with a single edge razor blade and paper punches.

I use motor oil on almost all new paper and cork gaskets when the parts may be removed.

Hi Bill
I have a NOS gasket that is the correct size for sale. Give me a call if you want it.

What thickness nitrile rubber should I use 1/16" or 1'8" without getting longer bolts?

Thanks.

Lonnie,

It looks like 5" x 5.2", is that what you are seeing?

Thanks.

I make a lot of gaskets and my procedure may be a little simpler than Lonnie's.

I place the mating part on the gasket material and trace around it. Them with the cut out gasket placed flat on the part, I use a ball bearing that is bigger than the screw hole placed over the hole and tap with a hammer. It makes a perfectly sized hole. Once one hole is made, I put a bolt through the gasket and into the part to hold the gasket in place. This keeps the gasket from moving as I cut the remainder of the holes.

If the gasket needs to have its center cut out, I place the gasket on top of the making part and simply run an exacto knife around adjacent to the inside edge.

Perfect size every time and far cheaper than buying an undersized one from the suppliers.

Peter -

I measured the photocopy of my remote when printed at "actual size", "100%" "no scaling". The distance between the outer edges of the solid sides (no cutout) is 5-1/4". The distance between the outer edges of the other two edges (one of which has the notch) is 5.0".

The important measurement is the center-to-center distance between the holes on each side.

> Distance between centers of the two holes on the side with the notch is 4-1/2". Same for distance between holes on the opposite side.

> Distance between centers of holes on the other two sides is 4-5/16". (Actually I measured 4-11/32" on the side that has the hole for the center shift rod.)

I measured two new Moss gaskets. The holes are no where near the correct distance apart, and opposite sides are not equal.

Don't see any reason for a thick rubber gasket under the remote. May screw up the geometry of the gear selectors on the selector rods. No real pressure in the gearbox. I use 1/64" Felpro gasket paper. No sealant, just a wipe of motor oil on both sides and on the mating surfaces.

I make all my gaskets myself with the methods mentioned above.
They are cut from a square meter roll and cost next to nothing and fit perfectly.

The picture is of the top gasket.

Peter G.,

A gasket cut out of I/16" Nitrile Sheet does the trick without changing those original setscrews or affecting anything else.

Thanks All,

I will take your advise and make a gasket from a good gasket material and to Lonnie's layout. I'm currently in the process to installing the carpet so now would be the best time to remove the Moss gasket I altered which has potential of a leak. I appreciate all of your input.
