MG TD TF 1500 - Transmission removal

How much of a hassle is it in removing the transmission from the car without pulling the engine?
CJ Henderson

I have recently changed my gearbox to a 5 speed without removing the engine and there were no problems at all. However the seats were out and I did have to remove toe board. I didn't use the exhaust studs to support the bellhosing but positioned my trolley jack back - front so it was easy to push the box into the engine.

Without the floor & toeboard it's very easy. I supported the engine on blocks & my son & I just pulled it back & lifted the gearbox out. Cheers

Peter, please clarify what the "toeboard" is.
I suspect you mean the footrest on the passenger side, right?

Even with significant spinal stenosis, as said above it's pretty easy with the seats and floor boards out. If a one person job I suggest standing astride and lifting back and out, and when replacing using studs as guides. Again I did it without a lot of stress or swearing by myself

No Tom. Just reusing the terminology from the post above mine. I mean the sheet of metal between the floor & the tub. Not just on the passenger side. The area painted black above the floor in the attached pic. Cheers

It's proper name is 'Scuttle Ramp'. Bud

When putting it back in CJ,
Install a couple of 8mm studs in the block at two and ten to guide the bell housing in at the right height and it really helps the have the dummy main shaft if you disturbed or replaced the clutch assy.
If you are doign it on your own - eat your wheaties before you pull it out :) I did mine at 63 and it took some effort.

"Toe Board" is what the factory called it (Service Parts List).

No reason to remove the Toe Board / scuttle ramp, just the wood floors and trannie cover,,,,

Thank you for confirming what I believed to be true. I removed the trans from my first TD back in the 70's, just removing the seats and floorboards. It seems that removing the toeboard would add quite a bit of work and effort to the process.
While my memory of events in the 70's is hazy, I do not recall having much trouble getting it out. The problem back then was that nobody could fix the trans. Even the local MG dealer was not equiped to rebuild the gearbox.
