MG TD TF 1500 - Transmission seizing wire...
What have folks used to wire tie the selector shaft bolts in the trans? Does it have to be anything specific or just SOMETHING to keep them seized? Alex |

Alex I used to work running construction sites so I just used the tie wire that we use to tie steel reinforcing rods prior to the concrete pour. (That's re-bar for you yanks!) Thought about using gal but wasn't sure if the gear oil would attack it & if so, didn't want to spread that residue over everything. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

hey alex, aircraft stainless steel safety wire. sold through many aviation maintenance supple houses. regards, tom http://www.aircraftspruce.com/search/search.php?s=safety+wire&x=15&y=20 |

I agree with Tom - and be sure they are properly wired and TIGHT - I see transmissions all the time where every locking bolt is loose because the wire was not done properly or tightly enough. The trans will NOT shift right with all that slop. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Thanks... I was thinking the aviation wire was the best suggestion, but wanted some reassurance first. Alex |

As stated, Aviation tie wire! It can be bought in various sizes/thicknesses. Doesn't snap off like regular construction tie wire can and can be twisted tighter. FAA approved! PJ |

I picked up a relativley cheap kit from a motorcycle shop. The tool isn't something you would want to use everyday if you were doing aircraft but was fine for the limited work on the TD/TF. I couldn't see forking over big money for the good twister tool for such limited use. |

for my first 15+ years working as an Aircraft mechanic i did not own a safety wire pliers..have the wire strands 90 degrees to each other as you twist/wrap them..once you have twisted them to the approximate correct length finish with a non marring duckbill pliers..there are many locations on aircraft where you cannot access the wire to use the specialty pliers. roll of wire, a pair of side cutters, a pair of hands and a pair of duck bill pliers..no specialty tool required. regards, tom |

bought my twist wire pliers from Harbor Freight. for what we have use for them on a T type they work fine. |

I found for the transmission bolts, doing it by hand was easiest. I did buy some, but they were only used for about half of the twists. Alex |
