MG TD TF 1500 - Triplex Plate Etching
For a number of months I have had an etching kit from Lew Palmer sitting on my shelf along with a brand new 1/4" accurate thickness windshield from FromTheFrameUp. Lew made the mask on my request. My former windshield was the standard metric one that required extra thick gasket material. It took me awhile to get some plating back from the chrome shop as well as the nerve to tackle this project. Mistakes are not allowed since once you apply the acid paste, it 'is what it is'. It was not quite as daunting as I thought it would be but care must be taken to get the mask down perfectly and burnished to the windshield. Protecting the sides with extra tape is also a must. Also you must line it up properly. Peter Hehir wrote some excellent tips that are posted on the following link along with information supplied by Doug Pelton of FTFU. http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/mgtd/mgtd_etchings.htm Sorry about the glare but this is a hard image to capture. Note that my car was made in early September 1952 so it has a second quarter 1952 windshield. ![]() |

Hi Chris. There is an error in my article which I should have corrected before I emailed it to you. BSV actually stands for British Vehicular Safety not Vehicle Safety Board. The first batch of stainless stencils looked great but have proven to be unusable as the font width was too small for either acid etching or media blasting. I'm presently negotiating with the manufacturer to correct this. Lew's mask looks good. The only comment I would make is that a September vehicle could also carry a 3rd quarter logo as by September, (the end of the 3rd quarter), most if not all of the 2nd quarter screens would probably have been fitted. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Peter: I made the fix. I went back and forth on the quarter code and decided on 2nd quarter since it was a very early September car and also the dot would have been more crowded over the I. |

Chris, I bought a Triplex windshield for our 72 B from Moss and it was thicker than the regular replacements. I wonder if they would have a Triplex for a T series. Have to check. PJ |

The Triplex MGB glass from Moss is made from the original moulds. It is the only 100% correct glass out there. I doubt the original tooling for T-Types is still around, assuming they didn't just cut it from glass stock by hand. |
