MG TD TF 1500 - Two More Horrible Jobs

I have just fitted the bonnet to the TF. How on earth do you get the nuts on the centre hinge support/cover screws at the top of the radiator? There is little room above the radiator top tank and with the lacing fitted it is almost impossible. I eventually glued the nuts to my finger and after about half an hour of frustration managed to get the threads started. The left side is worse because of the radiator cap. I also had to use the "glue nut to finger" technique for the bottom nuts on the bonnet catch buttons and especially on the nuts securing the catch plates to the bonnet top.

I use a 1/2" strip cut from a business card and super glue the nut to it. Then with judicious fiddling I gat the nut where it belongs. When tight pull the card off.

I've been looking for an excuse to order one of these:

I don't know if it would be any better than gluing things to your fingers, but at least you wouldn't have to clean the glue off!

I use a medium size hemostat - it has a locking feature that holds the nut securely while I get the screw started. Cheers - Dave

Mine's got fixed spring steel nuts and big PK type screws - I thought that was standard.

I'll tell you something that's worse than that (OK there are many!) - providing clearance for the brake pedal when there is none. Trying to get at the pushrod to adjust it on a fully assembled car is not much fun. The brakes don't fully release without it.

I install that whole nose piece first with out the bonnet in place. That allows me to reach under and get the nuts started without having to manage holding the bonnet too. Once loosely secured, I can then slip the ninety in the nose piece and then fit the rear piece at the scuttle. A spanner will fit on the nuts easily once you have them started.

I fitted a small rectangular piece of steel on the TD about 3 .. 4mm thick with a hole tapped to take the screw. Before final tightening I slide it anticlockwise under the rad cowl and then tighten it. You then cannot see it and makes life a lot easier.

I use a hemostat like Dave. My sister works in a hospital and gives me all I want. Some are very long, some are angled. Very handy when "operating" on or cars. PJ
