MG TD TF 1500 - ultra meadiocher, split ring question
Hey all, I just drained the TD gearbox and discovered, ( I've had my friend for 15 years), that there is a split ring on the drain plug. Can some one explain it to me? It would seem that the crush-able, copper washer would be enough? Thanks, Tom |

Something a PO added in the past. A copper sealing washer should be fine, unless the split washer has scored the surface of the sealing bolt, the gearbox sump, or both. |

Is the split ring a thin and round in cross section? If so, those were originally fitted to center the copper washer. As the threads are so coarse and deep, with a deep " cut" between the threads and the flange, the copper washer can walk off to the side, leaving a very thin sealing surface. As George said, it's an OEM part. Bud

Oh... That split ring. I thought you meant a lock or split washer. |

As ever, thanks folks. It now makes perfect sense, once it is explained to me. Holy Cow, an original part still in place! Thanks, Tom |
