MG TD TF 1500 - Undo Stick

I've seen several attempts at building a device to apply to the wire wheel knockoffs to "undo" them instead of beating them with a hammer. Moss sells an all metal one but i've seen home made ones that sure better. Have neoprene rollers so they don't scratch the knockoffs. Does anyone have plans to build one?

Nothing to do on a cold winter day in Pennsylvania!

This is what I made for the knock offs for my TR3. MG would be the same. These work very well, but maybe not something you could make easily in a home work shop. I have the good fortune of being employed part time in retirement at a tool and die company. I cut the poly urethane out on a water jet, and the backing plates out on a laser, then drilled and taped the poly. I use a 1/2" breaker bar, but am looking for an old beam type torque wrench. My click type torque wrench only works one direction.

If you google - wooden wheel spinner removal tool - you will find what you need. Easy to make from very thick ply - 3/4”min. I use one myself.

Lead hammers do not damage the chrome spinners. The metal leverage tools however, can damage the finish. Copper hammers destroy it. Wood protects fine but doesn't last many uses before falling apart.

My suggestion is to buy a lead "or faux lead" hammer and call it a day.

Thanks for all your suggestions but I saw a fellow at a car show had a three foot wooden handle with a metal bracket at one end that had two hard neoprene rollers staggered between the bracket. He hooked one roller over an ear and under the other. The leverage of the three foot handle allowed him to just pull the nut loose. I offered to buy it but he wouldn't sell it. It's a simple design , won't scratch and doesn't require a guerilla to twist it? I thought maybe someone had plans for one. He called it an "Undo Stick"!

I've used a Lead hammer for years and it does no damage to the chrome. I tried the wooden wrench, bought two of them, after the first one fell apart I went to the lead hammer, best thing I ever did. I think I still have the other wooden wrench still in the original wrapper, somewhere! PJ

Home Depot sells a hard rubber faced dead blow hammer which I have used for years. It does no damage and lasts forever.

The problem with that 3-foot long tool is that you have to carry it the car. A hammer fits in the tool box with the rest of your tools.
