MG TD TF 1500 - Upholstery Question

In the upholstery kit I got from Moss is a strip, (photo), that I have no idea where it goes. It is 8.5 feet long and aprox. 7/8ths of an inch wide. The photo shows front and back. Mosses instructions are ok I guess for someone who is replacing the original upholstery, but I'm basically starting from scratch as my car was a mess to start with. Here's a photo of the strip, anyone know where it goes? PJ

Paul S Jennings

Paul . If I remember correctly you manufacture the side curtain door/ close strips from the 1 long strip you have (2)

Gerard, Do you have a photo/illustration of how or where this is installed? PJ
Paul S Jennings

They are used to trim the underside of the sidecurtain box lid. You should have black felt in the center and where the rexine joins the felt, you overlay these strips.

Sadly I have no pictures of this for the TF. Perhaps Matthew can take a picture of his lid for you and also measure the placement of the strips for you from the edge of the panel.

Here is a picture for the TD.

Thanks Chris, You answered my question! As usual! Grin.
Paul S Jennings

Paul are they black? not your trim colour?
ROD BRAYSHAW

Paul, further to your question ( Christopher was right of course )

Horst Schach bible page 174 and 175 explains it all.

Rod, The interior of my TF is going to be black. Not correct, but the paint is not correct either being Jaguar Regency Red, the top will be Black also along with the fenders. I just went out to the shop and pulled my lid down and it's covered in side with felt and the strip were talking about is Hidem, not this flat material in the kit, this is why I questioned it.

Here's what the car will look like. The paint on this car is not Regency red, but very close. Regency Red is a little more vivid. PJ

Chris is correct. Added a pic showing my original. Yes, they used staples on an angle. You can also see the coarse horsehair felt. Fairly cheap upholstery for this hidden location.

Matthew.

Chris yours appears to have been secured with tacks? Also was the felt as coarse as Matthew's was? Cheers

Thanks Matthew, you came through again! The picture of your original is worth a thousand words. Another for my archives. Happy holidays! PJ

Was the floor of the curtain box covered with vinyl or felt? Mine wasn't covered. PJ
Paul S Jennings

Hi Paul,

I believe the floor of the curtain box was covered in felt, to 'protect' the sidescreens when stored there. Others will confirm?

Cheers, and a good Christmas to all,

Peter: The TD's were secured with tacks. Same with the strips on the sides of the boot where the fender covers laid on top of the floor. After they sold enough TD's it appears the MG was able to buy a staple gun :-)

The black felt was pretty coarse. Probably all the same but also varied by supplier.

Christopher Couper

Was the felt fastened with anything or just laid down. I saw no evidence of glue or tacks/staples.

The original felt that was in my TD was in two pieces. A piece up the back, and a piece up the front and bottom with two "ears" to cover the sides and top area. It was fairly heavy felt. and Black in colour.

The felt was glued in. What kind of glue I am not sure as it was very dry and brittle when I took it out.

Yes, glued in (maybe glue from the same source that provided the horsehair -LOL).

The bottom of the TF sidescreen box had the same felt (or a little thicker), with a cut-out for the differential access panel. It was when replacing this felt that I spotted the paint shadow from the tool box lid.

The following comments are for my TD. The TF may differ.
I have the original cover. There was evidence of glue on the cover.
I used black felt from Moss. It did not come direct from Moss.
I purchased it off eBay for about 1/2 price.
I used contact cement in a can and brushed it on. You need to use about 4 coats on the felt. I only glued the felt by the edges.
It would be almost impossible to install if you tried to glue the entire felt.

On the door, I did not like the Idea of using staples. I saw no evidence of prior stapling and unless you use SS staples they will eventually rust an look bad.

For the side curtain box cover, I coated about 1/2" of the edges, top and bottom with contact cement. 4 coats, 20 minutes drying time between coats. I put two cotes on the black strip, also allowing 20 minutes drying time between coats and a final 40 minutes drying time.
I then folded the edging over the edge of the felt so that 1/2 was on the top and 1/2 was on the bottom. I mitered the edges.

I then marked on the side curtain top where the felt should go, using masking tape and applied 2 coats of glue to both the wood top and the felt, now with edging.

Removing the tape I carefully applied the felt.

One other not, The Moss drawing shows a rudimentary, dimensioned layout. The actual pattern you need for the box is quite different. Because, on the TD the box is at an angle the ears are not rectangles but trapezoids.

Remember these are dimensioned to fit MY box. Use the dimensions only as a guide.

I used two separate pieces. On running up the back by the gas tank backer and the other in the will.

Merry Christmas to all.

Wow! Thank for JA for the detailed drawing. I'm about to do this same job but felt overwhelmed looking at moss's lousy layout. Having no remnants from my car to work from I gave up before starting yesterday Does the front of the fuel panel receive felt also?
