MG TD TF 1500 - Valve adjuster threads

Tried the archives and couldn't find the answer:-

What thread form are the valve adjusters and the lock nuts? BSF or metric? The threads are messed up on several and I need to get the right die to set them right.

They should be metric - 8 X 1MM to be specific. Cheers - Dave

This is what you want:
Carbon Steel Hex Rethreading Dies. For cleaning and repairing existing metric threads. Not designed to cut new threads 8MM 1.00
Do not use a cutting tap or die.

Thanks, Dave, that's what I thought, but I wanted to be sure before I ran the die down them. I was able to confirm using some known bolts and nuts.

Too late, Len, already did 'em with a 8mm X 1.0 die I had to hand. If that ruined some then I'll just replace them. A couple were pretty buggered up to begin with. I'm using all new nuts, so that should help.

BTW, Dave, I was doing all this as I was trying to use "your" method on ttalk.info to determine which cam I have and what valve clearance I should be using. It worked a treat once I got my adjuster problem dealt with. Many thanks to you for providing that information and to Bud for publishing it!

Len - Where can one find a thread chaser for the 8 X 1 mm? I have looked all over for the Mad Metric fasteners used in the engines. Cheers - Dave

I Googled them upon Len's suggestion and found that they are readily available.

Just a thought... if the threads are messed up on the adjuster's shaft, it is usually because someone has been overly aggressive in tightening the lock nuts (over torqued) and has actually stretched the shaft to where the threads are no longer the proper pitch... and that over-torquing will also make the adjuster no longer really hold tight in future since the shaft will have lost its tensile strength. I would suggest replacing them with either new or known good used adjusters.

Kevin likely correct. Feel the threads and /or lay a straight edge across them. I have seen several that not just the threads are messed up, but the adjusters are actually stretched and hour glassed. George
