MG TD TF 1500 - Valve Cover Question
Am I missing something? This valve cover on eBay (301154721378) is indeed quite attractive, and one of the less-common versions of the alloy coffin-style. It has also reached $140 with 3 days to go. But I have never before seen a filler cap that is hollow, and open to the rockers. Seems fairly pointless to me, and pretty messy... Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Tom, XPAG maybe, but perhaps not a TD Jim |

Good day all: The cylinder head cover may possibly be used on a TD if the vertical spout, for the rubber elbow connecting the original oil bath filter assembly, is fitted to the near-side of the head. In that case the oil filler hole would be to the rear as per a TC. The TC cover does not have the vertical spout but rather a machined hole on the off-side that accepts a rubber grommet. This grommet is held in place by the insertion of the small spout on the air cleaner (cannister) assembly. The octagon screw in cap, while useless as it is, may possibly be missing a further press fit piece. I have something that resembles the ball of a trailer hitch which fits into the oil delivery hole on a cover of a slightly different shape (having rounded corners vs the sharp). For what it's worth then, respectfully submitted: Jack Emdall, TC6768/TD3191, Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia, Canada |

Jim - I think it is for a TD - it has the breather spout pointing upwards, unlike TC or TF. Jack - I really don't understand the open filler cap, and can't see how it could be missing anything - it would surely leak! Why not make it as a solid cap? The threads have to be cut no matter what... Tom |

Makes you think there was some kind of large rubber breather pipe in there that went somewhere, but I would not be able to fathom a guess to what. |

Tom, I suspect it may be missing an expandable rubber stopper. I have an older tractor that has an oil fill which is that type, not such a big hole though. Jim |

It's missing the breather/fill cap. I think David has one on Izzy if my memory is correct. |

Guess not, but I have seen one here with the breather type cap. http://www.ttalk.info/images/Sheward/mini-Gasket%20Trick.JPG |

"It's missing the breather/fill cap." Could be but all such caps I remember, mostly domestic, were female. If a short tube was pressed in then one of those would certainly work if the right diameter. |

My cap does have a small vent hole ...but is sealed with rubber gasket and lock tabs. ![]() |

Good day again: I will try and add a photograph of the piece I have that I mentioned as being possibly similar and missing from the cover in question. By-the-by MG LaVerne, when I tried the site link you provided I got a blue screen with the heading Ttalk, but the menu on the left consisted of headings like:" Naughty Girls, Swinger Site, Camgirls" so I, at my age gave those a miss. ![]() |

That image wouldn't open because of the 'space' in the URL. Browsers don't really like that %20 bit. I've removed the space and renamed the file. You can see it at http://www.ttalk.info/images/Sheward/mini-GasketTrick.JPG But, Dave put it up anyway. Bud |

Jack, that's a real pain with this internet world. Sleazy outfits buy the URL's that show when an error occurs in loading a page. You are automatically linked to them. In this case it was caused by the space in the original file name. Many browsers will not recognize the '%20' as indicative of a space character, ergo, an error. Gotcha'! Sorry about that. Bud |
