MG TD TF 1500 - Valve job input requested

In the final stages of supercharging my TD. Supercharger has been ordered. Spare Distributor is being done by Jeff. Spare rocker assembly has been refurbished by Rockers Unlimited in CA.

Now for the spare head questions.

1. Should I go to the expense to put MK II larger valves in the head?
2. Anyone know of a place that will port and polish the head?
3. Are SS valves with stellite tipped stems worth the extra money?
4. What about new valve springs?

Thanks

Joe

Joe, Rockers Unlimited does excellent work. But, they have been known to err in assembling the order of the rockers on the shaft. I'd suggest that you check yours before you install the assembly. Only takes a few moments. Bud

1. Yes on the bigger valves

2. I would contact Doug Pelton at the Frame Up and probably Manley Ford. I'm sure Manley would know but Doug might know of a closer source. Although I did not do anything special to the head on my car, if you send the head out you might look into having the center port dividers removed. Seems to be a trick method with the tuners.

3. Yes

4. Have the old ones checked. Chances are they will be just fine.

Whose blower will you be using?
MG LaVerne

Joe, you may already have the larger valves, measure them first, Yes use the larger valves.
I have HEADWAY do my cylinder head porting, I get wholesale pricing from them.
Consider a Roller cam designed for supercharged application.
A roller cam & roller lifters simply do not wear out.
A roller cam will always outperform a flat lifter cam of the same duration. No ZDDP needed.

Thanks.

LaVerne I decided to use Tom Lange. Tom has been excellent in answering my questions and has been super to deal with now and in the past. I went with the polished one. I have used Tom's stuff before and found the quality to be superb. His thermostat housing for example are truly a functional work of art.

I am not a real concours kind of person. I really wanted the performance and reliability of a modern supercharger that had the look of a old one. Just too much work finding, restoring and maintaining those old ones for me. I was already familiar with the Guts since it is the same one used in the Mercedes SLK and SRT Crossfire. Actually the same identical car under the sheetmetal. Very reliable especially since I did not need a inter cooler with a carb set up.

Len You may not remember but I am the guy who called you to discuss using the roller rockers only and your advice then was it really was not worth the cost since I was not going to use a modified cam. Thanks for the heads up on Headway. I will look them up on the Internet. Are they back east?

I have already confirmed I have the small ones in the head I planned to use. I was only going to redo the head as a relatively quick fix to improve some horse power to go alone with the supercharger. The engine burns no oil and it leaks a couple of drops so it is a sound bottom end. Just wanted a little more performance and the MG stage pamphlet lead me to believe that a supercharger was the quickest way to improve performance without rebuilding the engine since I was not going to mod the bottom end.

My first experience with the T series was in 1960 as a high school kid and latter I helped another Air Pilot pilot restore one as I was doing my MGA. Sounds crazy but I just always liked the looks. It also giave me something to do.

Really wanted a Morgan since I own a Tr3 and was aware of the engine performance but this T was more in line with what I wanted to spend. Somehow a little spent at a time does not seem as much when you spread it out over a restoration. No big surprise but it really still is my favorite roadster. Just not my fastest.

Funny hindsight is always 20/20. I could have bought a Morgan for all the time, effort and money I have dumped into the TD. Somebody will really get a super car someday. There is a lesson here I think.

Thanks Bud I will check it out when it arrives. Mail has been slow with 2 feet of snow.

Bud it checks out perfect. Thanks to Rockers Arms Unlimited. They have done other work for me but this was a disaster when it left here.

I was totally blown away by the quality of the job they did. I wish I had a before photo. Honestly it looks new.

I've used them a few times now (even before they changed hands) and have been very impressed with the work. I was especially delighted to see the increase in oil pressure. Bud
