MG TD TF 1500 - Voltage Regulator Mounting Nuts

I am about to change my voltage regulator and before I loosen the under dash cover I thought I would ask if the if the nuts on the inside of the firewall are captive or lose. It would sure be an easier task if they are captive. Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Loose. good luck

Chris is correct. Getting the regulator off is easy, getting it back on is something else. I took the advice of someone (whose name I have forgotten). Go ahead and remove the regulator and after getting it off get a piece of 1/8 X 1/2 strap iron (available from Lowe's or Home Depot), cut it a bit longer that the regulator. Sit the regulator on the strap iron and center the iron between the two mounting holes of the regulator, mark the iron under the holes, drill and tap the iron for a 2BA screw. If I remember, I drilled and tapped a 10/32 screw, the put some double backed tape on the iron, had my wife set the regulator back in place and drop the screws back in place and hold everything in place while I positioned the plate in under the screws and had her tighten the screws. I then ran a pilot drill through the firewall from the 10-32 tapped hole in the iron, removed the regulator and enlarged the pilot hole with a counter sunk hole in the firewall and tightened a short, 10-32, flat head screw in and tightened it in place. From that point forth, I have been able to remove and replace the regulator with ease and without having a helper. Cheers - Dave

Thanks a bunch guys! That's what I was afraid of. As with most everything else on a TD it ain't easy.

Actually Dave. All I think you needed was the wife holding the screws from the top side while you convoluted your body under the dash to attach the lock washers and nuts :-)

And AR we hope you don't have the underdash.

I've just spent the week-end at the British Invasion in Stowe, Vermont (great week-end!).

Abingdon Spares (www.abingdonspares.com) had a booth there and were offering new 5-post voltage regulators for $25.

At that price, needless to say, I bought one even though my own is running well.

I have the under dash cover. If I didn't I think the job would be a lot easier!
