MG TD TF 1500 - Water Pump

My water pump on 53 TD has a leak - looks like thru weep hole at bottom.
I just bought a replacement from Moss and will install soon.
Does anone who has done this have any suggests or cautions?

It instructs me to "bed the seal" by running the impeller for 60 seconds using a power drill. I assume this is before installation.

Any suggestions would be welcome. I put a new water pump on my MGA and all went well.
Thanks,
Bill Chandler

I ran it in as they suggest. After 240 miles, no leaks yet. Kinda nice having one less grease fitting to deal with.

Do test fit the key and pulley on the bench though. Mine had no issues but it's easier to adjust this stuff standing up straight.

Mr. Chandler:

I have just recently installed the Moss water pump on my TD engine that I am in the process of rebuilding. The engine is still on the engine stand - I haven't installed it in the frame or run it yet.

I "bedded the seal" with an electric drill as recommended by the Moss info sheet - but rather than use the drill chuck directly on the threaded end of the pump shaft - I used a piece of clear flexible tubing - the kind you use when siphoning your home-made beer / wine - pressed it over the end of the pump shaft threads and onto a similarly sized / diameter piece of rod in the drill chuck and that seemed to work well - without the possibility of damaging the pump shaft threads.

Also - I note - now that the pump is mounted on the engine - that there is a slight ridge on the under side of the tube that comes off the RH side of the pump where the hose is attached - probably a result of the casting process - which I'm thinking I probably should have filed or ground off smooth prior to painting the pump and mounting it. Otherwise the hose clamp will have to be cinched up quite tightly to minimize coolant leakage at this point.

Hope this helps.

Follow the instructions for bedding in, which will tell you that you only bed in just prior to install and filling coolant in system. If you dont keep it wet after bedding it well not work well. If you bed in and are not ready to install and fill system, then drop it in a bucket of water until you are ready.

I just checked the moss catalog and it appears the only pump they now sell has the six vane impeller made of bronze. Anyone know who's design bronze?

If you are doing this with the radiator in place, duct tape a piece of card board on the rad to save your knuckles when removing/replacing the fan bolts
