MG TD TF 1500 - water pump

Has anybody managed to buy a replacement water pump that fits straight out of the box. I have had to fettle every pump I have bought on the bottom/ timing side of the flange.
I have told all the UK suppliers but they still come. It is not a big problem but should not be still happening.
OK,rant over, back to work.

I just had a used pump rebuilt here in the USA.

I guess there are rebuilders in the UK.

A rebuilt original is the best way to go. Permanently sealed bearing, 6-cane impeller, and a perfect fit. The rebuild doesn't cost much more than a new reproduction pump. That said, I know people who have installed Moss pumps without issue. That's Moss US though, so maybe the UK suppliers are using a different source?

I bought a water pump 10+ years ago from Moss and had the same problem as Ray describes. A couple of years ago I bought a 6 vain pump from the MG Octagon Car Club spares dept and it fitted straight on.

This latest pump is from the Octagon club. It must be that one of the master patterns is faulty and luck of the draw which you get.
It is not a big problem, but this one was not at my home so no grinder to sort it. It is a 6 vane with the proper small clearance between the impellor and body.

I got mine, about two years ago, from FTFU. No problem fit like a glove.

It is not a major problem.A minute's work with a grinder solves the issue.

Or take it to someone who can do it for you.

I know it is not a major problem, it is already fettled and ready to fit.I had to grind off 2.5mm in one area
I am an engineer and if I make something I make it to fit.
One of the spares I carry is an overhauled pump, if was not right, what would I do in the middle of nowhere?

Presumably you would check its fit before carrying it as a spare.
IW Martin

I am just making the point that you should not have to check new parts fit? Surely that is the job of the maker, I do it, why don't they?.

If I go into a shoe shop and buy a pair of shoes, despite knowing that I am size 9, I will always try them on for size.
You know it makes sense.
IW Martin

Ray, I think you have a completely valid point. However, considering the age and obscurity of these cars, and the very limited quantity our aftermarket parts are manufactured in, we do have to put up with a few annoyances like checking the fit of parts that should bolt right on. This is one reason why I restore and re-use as many OEM parts as possible, even if it takes me three hours to restore a $10 part.
Steve Simmons

Many years ago, like in the late 70s or early 80s, the casting changed on then OEM available pumps. Moss or someone had a note in the catalog that minor grinding had to be done to fit. So this is nothing new. Some of the repro and later factory production parts were likely made from and original engineering drawing, which had been altered or superseded during production. A modern maker perfectly makes a part off of the original drawing- which had been changed, etc. By now, anything but rare NOS or rebuilt factory stuff is reproduction. Try fitting new Camaro weatherstrip, various 280Z parts, etc. Very challenging. George
