MG TD TF 1500 - Water Pump Issue

I am trying to replace my water pump on my 1953 MG TD. I have removed all 4 bolts and the fan; however the pump will not budge. Is it stuck or do I need to do something else. I have removed the cotter pin from the pulley but I can't get it to come off either. Has anyone experienced this an have any suggestions?

Hi

You need to take the engine stabiliser off as well and get that out the way.

Don't get violent with it....it should come loose with some gentle taps with a wooden mallet and come off easily enough.

Corrosion is holding it on...nothing else.

As you know it is a casting so the enthusiastic application of a BFH would be most unwise.

If it is still clinging on after a few taps of the mallet don't resort to heat yet. Apply penetrating oil for a couple of days and see if it will come off on Boxing Day

Sharpen a putty chisel to a good taper then tap it between the water pump flange and the head, working your way around the pump. You may have to make several circuits around the pump to finally work it out. Cheers - Dave

W,
i'm assuming that you have also removed the pump mounting bolts and nuts? You only mentioned removing the four fan bolts.

not that he needs it, but i second what dave said.
i see from your post you have removed the four pump housing bolts and the fan/bolts as well so sometimes even a very thin putty knife inserted by hand, without hammer tapping, will work as well.

4 bolts? There should be two bolts and two studs with nuts holding the pump on. The original studs can rust and really stick inside the pump mounting hole, penetrating oil will help loosen that up.

i assume a DPO replaced the studs with bolts. regards, tom

W,
Did you ever get your water pump issue straightened out?

Hmm. No answer

I guess he is still out in the garage trying to get that pump off
