MG TD TF 1500 - Water Pump mounting holes

I am replacing the water pump and wondered if the bolt and stud holes run all the way in to the water jacket in the block.
I would think not - and I hope not.

Can someone confirm?

Thanks in advance,

Jeff,

I believe on my TD one or two of them do go into the water jacket. I use copper cote or antiseaze on the threads.

I agree with Ed.

Yup, I had to RTV a couple of the fasteners to prevent leakage.

Hello Jeff. Yes the holes are thru into the water jacket. Also remember that the lower holes take the longer stud and bolt. They are 1/8" longer than the upper stud and bolt to give adaquate engagement of the threads while holding the engine stay bracket on.

Jeff,

Did you get your stripped bolt out?

I suggest permatex thread sealant for this application. Regards, tom

Thanks so much for the responses. Sure wish those holes didn't go through to the water jacket!

I'll use a good sealer as suggested and will also use an anti-seize compound on the threads.

Don - I did manage to remove the one damaged bolt - will chase all threads with a tap and will use a die on the studs.

Have to knock the pump off the front of the block this weekend - it almost feels as if it is welded to the block! Wouldn't budge after removing all bolts and nuts.

Got no movement after placing wood block against water pipe on right side and hammering against it.

Will get it off Saturday - I hope.
Then clean the area and put all back together. Thanks agai. For the info.

Jeff,
Just curious,,, did you have to grind any of the "new" pump casting to get it to fit???

jeff, the purpose formulated thread sealer will seal and keep the threads free for future removal. i question whether a grease (anti-sieze) and sealant combination is your best installation procedure.
