MG TD TF 1500 - Water pump question

Hi guys,

Does anyone know what the seal seat in the late model water pump is made of? It looks like a copper colour to me but perhaps it is brass or bronze?

Hi Bob. One of the pumps that I pulled apart did have what seemed to me to be a copper face on the impeller. There is a pic of it in the article that I sent you a while back. The seat in the late pumps (TD/TF) seemed to vary. See attached pic. Cheers

Hi Bob. The original specification called for copper washer to be furnace brazed to the cast iron impeller. On the early style had a much larger seal face and it ran carbon to cast iron.

Thanks guys. That explains why all the late pumps I have dismantled have looked like copper. Perhaps that would be safest to use on an early pump I am converting. If cast iron and copper are both OK I guess the material is not critical. I was planning to use brass or bronze.

Hi Bob. Interestingly the couple of newer pumps that have plastic impellers have a brass washer that had come loose and caused the pump to leak. I think designer specified a plastic that had too much plastisizer which prevented the glue for the brass washer from bonding well to the plastic.

Definitely not plasticizer, but sounds like poor surface preparation for whatever bonding agent they used (and lack of mechanical grip). Most plastics want to expand and contract more than brass, putting stress on any bonded joint.
