MG TD TF 1500 - Water pump type

hi,
I know there are two types of pumps. Late pump features a improved seal.
Although my engine is a late TD, the water pump may have been changed in the past. Is it possible to identify which pump is fitted before removal ?

Hi Mike. The late TD and the TF carried the same pump, the 24433. These can be reconditioned using a seal from a washing machine pump. The earlier pump fitted to the TC and the early TD was originally the 22838. This can also be reconditioned but with considerably more difficulty, requiring machining of the pump body seat. The April issue of TTORC due out shortly does have an article on the restoration of the 24433. The numbers are cast into the body of the pumps. Original seals still do exist as NOS on E Bay but are invariably useless because the rubber has long since petrified. Cheers

That should read "Hi Laurent". The problem with the cut and paste... Cheers

Fair enough. You do. Would you like to know how to rebuild it? If so email me off line. pjbm at bigpond dot com. Cheers

Thak you peter.
First I'll install a new one. The old one doesn't leak. but I'l afraid it will at the worst moment.

Do you think if I store the old one today with no leak, it won't leak later also ?
Is it worth fitting a new seal for a spare part waiting to be used ?

Laurent there are new pumps and there are new pumps, the quality varies considerably. The 24433 is a great bit of gear. My rule is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I love seeing original parts being restored and reused. As your name pops up here from time to time, my guess is you're pretty hands on. The seal depends on the condition of the rubber. As I said above NOS seals that occasionally pop up on E Bay are useless as the rubber has almost always petrified. So if it was me I'd ignore the new pumps, try and find another 24433 or two and spend a little money restoring it yourself. The washing machine seal is about $30 AU and the bearings are inexpensive. That way you have two original pumps, including an original unit ready to go back into the car if and when it does leak. The other test is the noise. Stick a big screwdriver handle up to your ear and the other end on the pump then have a listen, just watch the spinning fan though. That will give you an indication of the condition of the bearings. If it sounds OK and doesn't leak then use the recommended grease and leave well enough alone. Meanwhile have some fun restoring a spare and add another skill to your bank of knowledge. Most new stuff is crap and unlike the originals, doesn't have a grease nipple, can't be serviced and is designed to fail. Email me and I'll send you the how to. Please note it is for your use only though and is NOT for publication! Cheers

A further comment on the AM water pumps. A couple of days ago I was informed that one of our club members installed a pump he'd purchased from Moss and it didn't last a year. The shaft had sheared in two! Caveat emptor. Cheers
