MG TD TF 1500 - Water temperature fixing at Radiator
Good day all: Having recently buggered up on the windscreen wiper motor thread, I thought I'd seek some redemption by asking the group for the following assistance. The fixing nut, for the water temperature gauge at the radiator, refuses to tighten to the stub. This lack of action allows a slackness of the capillary tube within the nut and affords water the ability to drip. This will not do. The replaced gauge is a an original, refurbished unit, and replaces an original. For some reason though, and I reckon it to be a depth difference in the threading of the nuts, it will not secure as it should. I have been told many supposed ways to clear this up, one being to wrap solder wire, around the capillary tube, within the nut. Well, as proven, I am not adept in M.G. matters and the former fix, has not. Rather than sweating the threaded stub from the upper tank, seeking a replacement bit (about as easy as finding a Dynamo CE Bracket for a TC), has anyone any idea of a viable jury-rig fix ? Can you attach a picture of the banjo bolt that is at the end of your capillary tube, pushed up against the sensor? That might help us evaluate the situation better. There are two places it could leak: 1. is the threads of the banjo to the radiator tank (that should not be an issue but teflon tape could fix that) 2. the other is the sensor at the banjo. More difficult to fix if there is a problem here |

I suspect that the threads in the fitting that the temperature sensor goes into are fouled. Get a 5/8 - 18 bottom tap and use it to clean and straighten the threads in the fitting and see if that doesn't allow the nut to thread in sufficiently to hold the sensor tight. Cheers - Dave |

G'day again all: Regarding the brass fixing nut: it is the type found on; carburetter, petrol feed lines, air equipment, toilet and clothes washer feed lines and for a variety of other plumbing uses. But sans the compression olive as on most of the others. On closer examination it appears that the male, threaded fixing stub (pipe), extending aft from the near side of the upper radiator tank, is to short. Therefore; the fixing nut runs out of thread and is unable to properly seal its inner, flat surface adequately against the periphery of the threaded stud (pipe). I will try, if needs be, my hand at taking a picture of the villain and submit it at a later time. Emdall: TD3191 |

When I fitted a similar Smiths dual gauge to a Morris Minor I had to get an adapter fitting to connect to an aftermarket thermostat housing. Would such an adapter solve your problem? Attached is a photo of the set up on this car. Sorry it's not a T series car. John F. Quilter Eugene, Oregon USA ![]() |

Sorry to butt in on this thread but, John, where did you get that adapter? What store? PJ |

I got mine from Jet Motors who were vendors at the Portland (OR) All British Field Meet. Here is a link to their website showing the item. http://store01.prostores.com/servlet/jetmotors/the-Engine/Categories Hope this helps. John F. Quilter Eugene, Oregon USA |
