MG TD TF 1500 - What does beige mean?

On Chris Couper's excellent site he lists beige as one of the three interior colors available from the factory for MG TDs. I'd like to know what the majority feel is the closest color offered by Moss to the original beige. The Moss colors I'm looking at are Tan, Biscuit and Honey Tan.

I don't think any of them are close. This is the original TD beige although discolored somewhat over time. Pic is from Matthew M. I also have an original pocket from a beige TD which is the same colour. The areas I'd unpicked where the sun & air hadn't affected it though were somewhat lighter. Cheers

Peter, the closest Moss sample I have to the color in your picture is Tan. You're correct, none of the Moss swatches match exactly the photo above. Of course time, the elements and the variances of color monitors make it difficult to determine what the original color was.

Thanks

Original dash Rexine from my TD, it had been stored in non-climate controlled hot attic for several years.

Circa 2005 Moss Biscuit interior. Very close IMHO. Material could be different by now of course. Beautiful craftsmanship on my kit back then. At that point in time, the Moss tan was very brown, without the correct for biscuit veining or mottling in it. George

I purchased my TD in the fall of 66'. The car was black the interior was black.

During restoration, when we stripped the paint, 1984-1986, it appeared that black was the original color.

When I finally got to the interior, a coupe of years ago, I found that the door cards and seat back had been painted over. The seat was a black vinyl cover.
Under the seat cover was the original (I believe) leather seat. I think beige. attached is a comparison to the present Moss tan (I had already purchased that or I would have gone lighter) to the original seats.
These had been covered from the sun for around 50 years.
Also Stored indoors for the last 45 years.

I agree with George, when I ordered samples from Moss the biscuit was very close to beige.

George's sample is now 12 years old though. Tim thinks Tan is closer. Maybe someone should post pics of the 3 current Moss options for comparison with the surviving original beige. Cheers

I am always amused when colors are discussed, photo processing and display monitor performance are always going to affect colors being displayed. Only process that is foolproof is comparison of physical samples.

That is true, but I don't see much alternative when we are discussing such matters over long distances.

In an ideal world Graeme, yes.. But as Dave says there is no practical alternative. Worth remembering that with the 3 current samples side by side, a reasonable conclusion can be drawn. Matthew's beige, my sample & Jim's beige, though taken years & continents apart with different cameras, under different conditions, are strikingly similar. Cheers

A TF for comparison. The 'biscuit' unrestored interior is more of a honey-tan colour than the TD in post 2. It seems from these and other examples that the TF was darker. I am happy that the colours of both cars appear reasonably true to what I saw (on my browser anyway).

The tan interior that I got from Collingburn was very similar in colour (as far as can be ascertained from looking at an IPad) to that shown in Matthews attached photo. That car is a well known original (though the colour may have darkened a little).

I'm interested in this conversation because the beige color in the photo which Peter posted looks to me to be the same color that was on my original TD seats (TD/C7254), although in very bad condition when I got the car.

In an effort to be helpful, I made up the following comparison to the interior color swatches available online from Moss, Heritage Upholstery, and PJM Motors. The closest to matching from these images appears to me to be the "light stone beige" offered by PJM Motors.

We are lucky to have choices as of now. I recently talked to a large re-upholsterer of dental chairs and he said many of the formerly plentiful vinyl colors are being discontinued due to lack of demand.

Just to show the variants that different cameras, lighting and monitors can produce here's my photo of the Moss colors. These are the actual swatches received from Moss.
