MG TD TF 1500 - What is this and do I need it?

The item in the attached photo appears to be broken. I assume it has something to do with the clutch rod. (?) I couldn't see it on the WSM illustration or on the Moss site.
Thanks

I've got the boss and threaded holes but nothing attached.

On my TD that is the mounting point for the cable type the clutch operation. I Think?
If it is on the other side of the sump from your clutch rods - it is not needed. You could possibly remove it - though I don't know if the bolts go all the way through the sump - they may need to be kept in place.

Rod, I think you are correct. I found the same WSM picture after I posted. Of course mine is on the other side since my car is LHD. I have solid shift rods so I don't know if they or the oil pan have been replaced over the years. I will remove the bracket. thanks for the help.

It appears that the clutch cable was fitted to cars up to chassis number 22250 (MG Service Parts list). So I guess the clutch rod was added later to my car.

It could also be that the oil pan is from another engine.

It was very common for the somewhat more-troublesome cable mechanism (once one strand of the cable broke, the entire thing began to fray, and eventually break) to be replaced with the improved solid rods. The brass cable bracket was usually left in place. If it doesn't foul the rods I would just leave it there.

Tim - If that is the original sump for your car, that means that it was converted to the rod operated clutch linkage, which also probably means that the clutch pedal stop bolt is missing, which will cause problems with the clutch rod (as in bending the end and ultimately snapping it off). E-mail me at SUfuelpumps@donobi.net and I'll send you information for making and installing a stop bolt. Cheers - Dave
