MG TD TF 1500 - What is this fitting?
Hi Everyone, I am working on my '51 TD (5751) and I needed to replace the oil pressure gauge feed, (which attaches to the oil feeder to the head) and there is a fitting next to it that I don't know what is. Is is quite loose which probably isn't a great idea! Picture attached. Thanks from an MG newbie. dan ![]() |

Dan, from your photo, I believe a prior owner installed an extra oil pressure fitting on the oil gallery. If I am correct, when you remove this bolt and the extra fitting, I think you will need a replacement (shorter) bolt to plug the gallery. The replacement threaded plug or bolt is Moss 328-100. For the time being, I would just try to tighten it up to prevent oil leaks and worry about corrective action a little later after starting the engine and confirming no oil leaks. |

perhaps i am mistaken, but isn't that where the early cars' block to filter oil pipe attached? regards, tom |

Dan, Tom is correct, the fitting is for pump to seperate oil filter connection. If your car has been converted to the later type oil pump with integral filter you need to make sure it was done correctly. |

Thanks for all the information. Max, what pitfalls should I be aware of that would consider the conversion to be done wrong? thanks, dan |

Dan, The following passage comes directly from Mike Sherrel's book "TC's Forever". It talks about converting a later block to take a TC type oil pump and filter which is the same as early TD pump and filter. If your car has the integral pump and filter you will need to read the passage in reverse - well sort of. Wolseley 4/44 BLOCK CONVERSION: Remove the oil pump/filter. Remove the plug in the filter bypass hole (this plugs the pump mounting face from the oil gallery) and insert TC spring, seat, ball and cover assembly. Page 46 Illust. No 20. Brown Book) .This assembly allows oil to pass directly from pump to oil gallery in the event of a blocked filter. Spot face and drill into the oil gallery on the appropriate casting boss for the pipe, filter to block. Tap thread. Original is 1/4" BSP. (British Standard Pipe). Drill and tap two holes (8x1) in block face for oil filter mounting bracket. Drill dipstick hole in correct position and fill existing one. Shift water drain tap from front to centre off side of block. + Dan, of course most of the above doesn't apply but you may be able to recognise the two M8 x 1 holes where the oil filter bracket was once mounted. I would take the loose fitting you mentioned off the block and replace it with a 1/4" BSP plug. Maybe take the oil pump off to check if the relief valve is there or if a plug is in place. The Brown Book is the TC operation manual. Others on the forum can offer advice as a check on what I have written. |
