MG TD TF 1500 - What is this hole for?

Asked this in another post. One hole on each side, I don't know what their for. They weren't used when I took everything apart, so I'm at a loss. It's very small, possibly a screw hole? PJ

Paul S Jennings

Couldn't say for a TF, but there's no such hole in a TD. Bud

I don't recall anything going in there.

MG LaVerne

On a TF it is covered by the dash padding, so it serves no purpose I know.

It's for a wood screw that screws into the end grain of the wood section. One each side, the CSK screw is about 1-1/4" long.
Rod Brayshaw

I agree with Rod, the screws were in my car when I pulled it apart and I put them back in on reassembly.
Max Irvine

Thanks Rod! I was wondering why they would put it there if it had no purpose. Now it makes sense! Thanks, PJ

Glad to learn that also - thanks Rod, the fount of all TF wisdom!.

So what is this screw for? As it has no structural value, what's it's intended purpose? Well, I think I figured it out. During construction, I believe it was for securing the scuttle in position for welding. Only thing that makes sense to me, as the block of wood that the screw goes into is already secure, being screwed to the cross over frame. I probably wouldn't have thought of that if I didn't have to cut and re-weld the left side to move the scuttle back. Only thing that makes sense to me. I found the right size screws and they are very small in diameter. Just a theory, but a good one I think! Yes/No? PJ

Paul I have to agree it is the same method I used when welding the Cowl during assembly.
