MG TD TF 1500 - Whining Noice

Hi,

Have taken the car a number of times this summer with no major issues. I changed the oil and filter and went with a thicker oil, my pressure at startup is now about 25 and hits 35-40 at speed, after warm the pressure is 10 at idle and 20-25 with speed. Yesterday I took it out of for nice spin around down and by the beach, about 75 minutes and 30 miles and at no time did I get that "oh no what was that" feeling. Water temp also looked good the whole time, at a red light it hit about 170 but driving it sits at 160.

This morning having a very hard time starting it, and when it did finally start I heard a loud high pitched sound coming from the engine area, and then the car dies. Tried a few more times and same thing. Thoughts?

Not being very mechanically inclined I don't know about what to check, I'm a bit worried that maybe this is something internal to the engine that's going to be a major repair, trying not to become a nail biter.

Check your tachometer drive gearbox. I had one that was short on grease make a rather shrill screeching noise and then the car died. I could restart it but it would then repeat the issue. It turned out that the tach gear box was seizing up, rotating and then grounding out the low tension lead on the distributor when it made contact thus killing the spark. It was hard to find due to the fact that there was enough spring tension to pull the gear box off the distributor after the engine stopped.

I don't think my tach is attached, could it be the same thing but with the speedometer? I did notice it was sometimes seizing up yesterday, it would stay at 0 and then jump up to 25 after I was picked up speed.

FYI I didn't do anything and just tried starting it and it fired up without the sound, took it around the block and seemed to be running okay. If the tach cable isn't attached would the tach bear box is still spinning, I would still want to see if that's the issue.

Steve,
A while back, you posted a problem,, I cant remember what it was about,, was it about the low oil pressure ,? Might this noise be related to that ??

Vaccum leak? Run @ a high idle and listen for leaks @ the intake using a hose to your ear @ & the other end @ the engine

OK, so far,, changed to a thicker oil, low oil pressure, trouble starting it, loud high pitch sound, then it dies,, let it rest and it starts,, I don't think it is a vacuum leak or the tack drive.

Check that the starter drive is not sticking. If the drive stays engaged and doesn't kick out of the flywheel ring gear like it is suppose to, you will hear a loud whirring noise. Clean the area on the shaft where it slides in and out, and make sure it springs back.
Richard Cameron

Use a stethoscope or a stick held to the suspected part and the other end to your ear. Probe around and you soon find the culprit.

Thanks Dave I needed a laugh!!

The screaming noise from the rear bush of the dynamo was caused by my lack of oiling it regularly.

(that lack of care was described by a German gentleman as "Pflegemangel" and that sounded almost as horrible as the screeching sound itself!)

Willem,

Good point! TD3966 starts screaming like a rotary saw when above 35 MPH. Don't know the cause, I hope it's caused by the oiler of the dynamo. I'll check tomorrow!
