MG TD TF 1500 - Who do YOU know ?

This forum is a rarity. If you’ve ever looked at other automotive forums and blogs, some can get pretty rough. Many use pseudonyms like graphic characters, maybe because of not wanting to use their real name. But we freely share our names, addresses, ‘phone nbrs etc, and we graciously send parts amongst ourselves, usually on a trusting basis or no charge at all.

I’ve owned MGs continuously since 1952 and have attended MANY MG events over the years, including the famous GOF Mk 12 of June 1971 in Waterville Valley, NH. where there were 425 Ts!. I’ve been to three MG Internationals including Indianapolis IN, Gatlinburg, TN, and Reno NV. Overseas, I’ve been to the huge MG flea market at Stoneleigh several times and MG Live several times. I’ve met with MG enthusiasts on my travels to England, Finland, France, Germany and Singapore.

As a result, I’ve come to know quite a few MG enthusiasts and thought it might be fun for us to list those who regularly participate on this glorious forum, who we know personally. And I will start (alphabetically) ...

Larry Brown - Carnesville, GA
LaVerne Downey - Fruita , CO
Gordon Lawson - Niagara-On-The-Lake, ON
Dave Runnings - Montreal, QC
David Sander - Jeffersonville, VT
Sandy Sanders - Hudson, FL
Mort Resnicoff - Munroe Township, NJ
Steve Wincze - Canton, CT

I’ve had much pleasure on this forum, not to mention the outstanding and quantum increase in knowledge about my MGs. I will likely however, be less active once the blasted %$#@*& snow goes, and I can get some serious work done on my PA. Everybody tells me that at 81, I’m nuts to be undertaking a total restoration, but hey, ya only get just so many chances to be stupid.

Off the top of my head, I have met Gord (Clark) The late Bob Jeffers from Wilton New Hampshire, Mort Resnicoff - Munroe Township, NJ- Blair Weiss from New Hampshire and Steve Wincze - Canton, CT and consider them great personal friends. I have exchanged emails with many others on this forum, but have not met them (yet). I always enjoy meeting people from this forum in person.
I frequent a Saab forum, Chrysler forum, Cummins Turbo Diesel Forum, Subaru forum, Jeep forum and several others daily. Of all the forums I frequent, this is the only one I personally know people from.
The people on this forum are a great group of people. Very friendly and eager to aid a fellow enthusiast. We are lucky to have this tool.

"Everybody tells me that at 81, I’m nuts to be undertaking a total restoration,"

Gord - My response to statements like that is a hardy PS!!!
We have a neighbor lady who is 94 and another lady who my wife worked with many years ago who is 91. Both are slower moving than when they were younger, but both are sharp as a tack. Our 94 year old neighbor is still a very beautiful woman that will make all but the most brain dead men stop and take a second look at her. Anyone saying that a 81 year old person is nuts for undertaking a full restoration is out of their mind, should not say it within ear shot of either of these ladies.

We also had a friend at our church who in his mid 80s could add, subtract, multiply or divide in his head faster than anyone could enter the numbers in a calculator, much less come up with an accurate figure. He was close to 90 when they came out with programmable calculator. He immediately purchased one and had it mastered in a matter of a few weeks. As he closed in on 100, he purchased his first computer and again had it mastered it in record time. He finally passed away at 104, making you look like a young-en.

So Gord, tell those naysayers to go take a hike or sit in their nursing homes and watch TV while you are enjoying your self restoring another beautiful car - and if you should decide to shuffle off this mortal coil before you finish the restoration, we here on the BBS can say without reservation, that Gord went doing what he liked (and he always kept the ladies smiling).
Cheers - Dave

I second all the above . My motto is : work on your cars ..even for a few hours a day. It will certainly keep the doctor away.

Doris Bailey, a Vermont legend and owner of a 1947 MG TC owned, restored and drove her TC well in to her eighties. She gave the car to her son in law, but still drives it on occasion.
Years ago I prowdly showed her the running engine I had just rebuilt in the TF. Instead of praising me, she told me it did not sound right. She put her purse down and promptly removed the valve cover. She exclaimed, "I thought so, Dave, you put the rocker shaft in up side down! Look, no oil on the valves. Pass me a 5/16 BSF I'll fix it!" I think she was 84 then, and she did fix it.

I read the T forum more than I comment... but have to say I really appreciate the helpful atmosphere. It makes me feel I can ask a (possibly stunned) question when I need to & every time I've had immediate thoughtful help. My TD is the only one running right now in Newfoundland... my closest neighbour is Bart in Cape Breton, NS. So the online community is critical for me. Must say I like the international flavour. Where else do you get comments from west coast, east coast, in between, north, south, New Zealand, maybe old Zeeland too, Norway etc?
Keep it up ! -- Peter

I have been reading this forum for several years and now have a folder full of info to help me replace some wood on my '52 TD. I just had to comment because I am 82 years old.

I must add that I have found this forum to be very friendly and helpful to people like me and I must thank all for all info I have collected. THANK YOU !!!

I've met a bunch of the folks at some GOF's or other events. Hoping to get to meet a number of you, up close and personal, on my upcoming 4,000+ mile Texas trip next month. Gee, Gord, maybe at 79 I should be considered nuts for attempting such a thing. This bunch look familiar from the GOF in Mystic in 9/2010? One is the lake Bob Jeffers. Bud

Thanks Gord for including me in your list.
I just returned home from my shop at 1530 today where I am replacing the total wiring harness on a 74 MGB.
My first of many English cars began in High school in 1947 when I was the only student with a four wheeld vehicle. It was a 1937 Morris ten.

I'd name names but I'm afraid I would forget somebody.

Lets just say that I have met a number of people here..including Gord... and several have become good friends. Haven't met a bad apple yet....must mean it's me..:-)
MG LaVerne

I too have met a lot of folks from this board, Just visited one and hope to see another at GOF CEntral, LaVerne, Dan is coming up for this one. It is going to be a good GOF so all on this board who can make it are invited to come up. Visit the MNMGTR for details on the GOF..ONe of our long time MG GUrus is selling out his stuff( Mega Stuff) and has a TD for sale.
Tom Maine

Gordon, may we all hope you start a new restoration on a new vehicle... in another ten years!
Geoffrey M Baker

Gee Bud, that TD looks just like mine except the chrome is shiny, the paint (green like mine) is pristine and the whole durned thing looks like it just came from the showroom. Working to get there but a long way to go what with driving three or four times a week.

Love all you guys.

As one of the new kids here, i listen a lot more than I talk, but I agree 100% with the comments about how supportive everyone is and I hope to get to meet many of you in the future. AndI think starting a new restoration at the age of 81 sounds like a noble goal!

I live in a part of my state where there is not a British car club for about 2 hours drive in either direction.

Yes, I do belong to a car club and do get over to their events a time or two a year, but with this forum, I have the best club there is.

Tons of friendly people that put up with my dumb questions and always have some new piece of information I can use.

I have had various british cars (and some others) for over 40 years and still consider myself a novice to some of the people on this web.

I have met a number of folks in person and hope to meet more.

With the input from all over the world, where could you find a better club.

I restored my TD in 1974/75. It has had some paint touchups and a number of mechanical things fixed/rebuilt since then, but I am truly looking forward to my soon approaching retirement when I have the time and ability to go back through the car and use all I have learned from this group to bring it back to as close as I can to the way it came to the US.
Bruce Cunha

No British car club within a 2 hour drive? Well I see things have not changed much from my four years in college at Marquette in Milwaukee in the late 60s. Way, way different from where I normally lived in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Gordon; Don't forget the folks that showed up for breakfast in Reno at MG2011. Been trying to remember the names, but many escape me. We have been privileged to have Laverne overnite with us on his cross country jaunts and he and Doris have returned the favor on our journey West. Gene and Ann Gilliam spent the night on the way home from GOF Central in '12. Sharon and I sat on Gordon Lawson's porch and told tales a few years back - stayed a neat B&B across the street.First met Tom Maine and others from the MN club at Chaska in 2007- always a good time when they show up. Dave Braun and Diane are always good company - hope to catch up at French Lick in June. A host of others have shared a cold beverage and bits of wisdom at the GOFs - thinkin' Cunha helped us lighten a cooler at Sheboygen a few years back. Anyway, we certainly look forward to the Gatherings each year. The cars are nice, but the company is kinda like family. See ya'll down the road. Dan

I'm like LaVerne...I've met so many people in person that I'd originally met on line that it's hard to keep track and I know that I'd leave out several if I tried to list them. The only one I've met who's actually visited the house was Tom Maine (a couple of weeks ago) but you are all welcome if you're ever in south Mississippi.

I've never met an MG owner that hasn't been worth making friends with.

If someone will sponsor me I will emigrate to the USA. No one from Scotland or even England has responded to this thread. I need to find a TF local to Glasgow to see what the side screen box looks like.

Hey Dan Craig, you're right. I forgot those breakfast quizzes we had in Reno. Lots of fun.

For those of you not already aware, David Sander is the Chairman of the New England MG T Register. He has restored at least 3 Ts that I know of, perhaps more. Between he and his father, they have a lovely car collection that they sequester in Cambridge Vermont, on the backside of Stowe Mountain, a lovely garage setting they call the "Garage Mahal", and they love to show off their cars.

Again, for those of you not aware, The New England MG T Register is the largest all-T-Series in North America with over 6,000 T-owning members.

The Register is celebrating 50 years this June in Middlebury Vermont at GOF 95. The main hotel, the Middlebury Inn, was filled by January and the satellite hotels are filling quickly too, So if you're planning to come, better do sumpin' 'bout it - and soon. Hi,

I do not know any member of this BBS in person, but it sure does feel like a great family...!

I just had a pleasant conversation with Tom Lange. We are both attending the New England MG "T" Register's Kimberfest in Maine. I can't believe I forgot to mention his name in my earlier post.

Been turning wrenches on MGs for over 40 years. Some of the folks I know, who know MGs are; Bob Satava, Tom Metcalf, Dave Zyp, Jim Pesta, Craig Seebrook, Fred Kuntz, Jack Smittle, Dan Glow, Dick Hall, and so many others that I have failed to mention, both living and passed.

I just spent the day with this guy. Bud drove up to my house this morning, and got to experience some real Vermont mud within a mile of leaving the interstate. We spent the next few hours playing with MGs and other cars. Bud proudly showed me his me his new hat from LaVerne.
What a great guy! Bud, I'm glad you made the trip. It was good to meet you and Lazarus in person. Be well,
David

Great gosh a-molly! I spent two wonderful winters back in '70 - '71 in Maine on my Uncle S's dime and I remember well playing golf in May (I'm not very good) and from the rough under some trees hitting the golf ball off of some remnants of snow - now I'm back in SC and it hit 80 F today. Loved Maine and New England but here is the place to be.

Love this group!

Had A great time at David's today. Got a chance to see a lot of his Dad's toys. Got to spend a few quiet, sentimental, moments with Frank Churchill's TD on which David did such a fantastic job. For me it was a 580 mile trip of emulation for next month's Texas trip. But I hoped to have done it with the hood stowed. Bud
Bud Krueger

Good to see Bud and Lazarus out and about after the long winter. Sharon and I are looking forward to meeting Bud on the Texas trip when we do way station duty in Missouri. Sounds like a great ride from Mass to Texas and back - maybe more topless time on that little run?. Dan
Dan Craig

I found this web site-bbs as a result of being contacted by Hank Rippert & Dave Raymond, about an issue I had when Dad passed on his TD to me.
As others have stated I do not want to leave out any names, but Gord, Bud, David, Steve, & Gene, come to mind.
I will not forget Doris Bailey, speaking to me about 6 years ago at a GOF, she detailed every part of a TC differential, what every part did, & how the bearing preload should be set!
Many thanks to all & to the moderator of this BBS.
