MG TD TF 1500 - Who would like new rear drums for TD disc wheels?

OK, so over on the 'rear brake drums' thread we've been discussing rear drums, and we've found a manufacturer who currently makes front TD drums and they sound like they could make some nice rear drum/hub units for the TDs. As you probably know, new rear drums are unavailable anywhere else presently and have been NLA for many years now.

This thread is to solicit folks who would want to buy a set, either for immediate use or to put into stock. If you'd be interested, please post to this thread to let me know so that I can tell them how many to make. Pricing, naturally, will likely be lesser the more that get made.

Thanks!

I would be interested. Given the number of TD's still out there, I would think the big retailers would be interested.

Are front drums currently in production for disc wheels? Who is the supplier and price? What is the ballpark figure for the rears? Price would be defendant on how many I might order as spares.

while I do not think I need them, if affordable I will take a set.

I would be interested in both FRONT and REAR brake drums for STEEL DISC (not splined wire wheels) wheels.

In the other thread was not really clear to me about FRONT drums truly available for STEEL DISC drums. The reference from Olson seemed to apply to having drums for splined (ie wire) wheel drums.
For me, given that the front takes the brunt of the braking forces, I'll take new front drums over rear if only one form is available. But if both are available for the STEEL DISC drummed wheels (not splined drums for wire wheels) I'll sign up for both sets.

PS: Thks for info on how front/back are different in the bearings area. Could have discovered myself if I took them all off. That's why this forum is so great!

I can get one of my TD rear hubs to Orson Equipment by mid Oct - a friend of mine lives near there and is over this way then. One way or another we should be able to find out if they can do it and perhaps some indication of cost / numbers required to make it viable.

This is still active. One of my TD rear drums should be delivered to Orson Equipment tomorrow. I have estimated the potential demand as a few dozen at the most. I am an MG Octagon Club member and it might be a good idea to get them involved (for the UK) if the cost looks anything like affordable.

Suggest contacting Abingdon Spares in the US, they may be interested in stocking. It has been many years since any new ones were made. Many cars running around with damaged splines on the rears (steel wheel- hub to axle splines). George

As before, I would also be interested in both FRONT and REAR brake drums for STEEL DISC wheels (not splined wire wheels).

Is this only for the rear splined drums?

The drum that has gone to Orson Equipment is a one piece rear drum for a TD with steel disc wheels.
I have a TF and not a TD, but I do have a couple of spare rear drums of the type described (not for sale because they belong with a spare rear axle), so I'm just doing this to help other forum members out. Any arrangement to supply to the USA would be up to somebody over there to organise, though I would help if I could. First step is to find out if they can do it and a cost indication. They will assume small numbers required.

I also would welcome a new set.

I briefly spoke to the UK MG Octagon Club about supply of spares to the USA, which they have resisted up until now. I believe that they are seeking arrangements to permit them to do it.

Dave,

Could you put my name down for a pair of rear drums.
However, it would be useful to have some idea of cost.

They should inform you of the following:

1/ The minium quantity for them to start a production run. this is to amortize their tooling and NRE costs.

2/ Costs of a single unit, or in this context a pair.

3/ Table of costs when ordering different quantities.

Some other questions are:
1) would these be a core replacement or "new/refurbished" stock?
2) what would cost of shipping to/from US to UK? (might make cost prohibitive given weights)
3) turn around time to do?

On a side note, I spoke to a local (Colorado Springs) guru of custom parts for European/racing cars (Martin Willis at http://mwthemachineshop.com/) and he does/has done brake drum refurbish for Porsche/etc drums and asked about a guesstimate to redo my TD brake drums. He was ball park of about $400/per drum maybe higher. Process would be to carve out the old liner, fashion a new liner, heat up and drop in the new liner. As Olson etc report, setting up a jig, etc makes the one time cost high. Didn't get into any volume $, minimums, any interest in doing more units, etc.

Randy, the long time issue with the rear TD/TF drums is not the drum surface, but the hub spline. Someone used to make inserts to replace those, but think they are long gone. George

Orson would be looking into new castings, hopefully by just changing the centre part from wire wheel type. The splines have to be broached. Waiting to hear on progress.
