MG TD TF 1500 - Why would you you do this?

The PO filled in the troughs on the running board. I was going to clean them out but then I thought all they do is collect water. Any one see a downside to leaving them filled?

Looks slippery to me when wet!

Mr. Haskell, I'll assume you are kidding. I of course would install the running board strips. I wonder why the troughs were stamped into the running boards originally?

I have always thought the running boards themself were more decoration then function.
The car is about a foot off the ground, how short would you have to be to need them?
Groves or not groves, whichever pleases you is my vote.
G D

Grooves like that are usually there to add stiffness to the panel.

Dave Hill

Dave Hill is correct. The grooves are there to add torsion support for the running boards. I would dig the filler out because at some point moisture could get trapped and cause rust.
Christopher Couper

One of the running boards that came with TF2071 has the grooves filled with lead, the other one doesnt. I am assuming that was not done to provide ballast for fast cornering on an oval racetrack. I am loath to start removing it as I suspect I will find something close to a lace curtain underneath. Does anyone actually stand on theirs?

Good points. Although the grooves have been filled for at least 20 years so if they were going to rust they would have done so by now. But now that I have disturbed the three coats or more of paint that sealed in the putty they probably will rust. Of course they are there for strength, don't know why I didn't think of that. Thanks gentlemen, looks like I will be grinding for a while.

Filled or not filled, digging the filler out will not disturb the strength.
