MG TD TF 1500 - Wind Wings
My wife got me some new wind wings for my TD for Christmas. Looking at them to install I can't figure out which way to mount them. Not sure if the adjusting knob should be facing the ground or the air. Looking at some pictures online of other cars I see it both ways. The instructions from Moss say "The slotted brackets fit over the flat edge of the windshield side rails with the knurled knobs uppermost and toward the inside of the car." Uppermost? Does that mean they are on the top? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Rich www.mgtd.co.nr ![]() |

Rich, I mounted mine with the knurled knob up but I've seen them mounted the other way as well. I put the knob up so that when the knobs loosened up, there'd be a bit more time to notice it and they wouldn't fall off the bottom of the threads. cheers, Dave |

Rich, I put mine on top. One word of caution. The set screw will need to be very tight and will probably scratch or remove the chrome plating at the point of contact. Make sure you put the set screw on the appropriate face. BTW, this goes for the sunscreen that mounts on top of the windshield frame. The PO put the set screw on top and it ate the chrome. I can cover the gouge with the bracket but unfortunately the PO moved them around and I have too many blemishes to cover. Mort |

I think you are forever going to have to live with the set screw marks. My car has had wind wings since day one and there are actually two sets of marks since we changed models in the mid 60's. They will never show as long as you have wind wings on the car but you can never go back to none once you mount them. You could try putting in a little brass shim material between the set screw and the windshield frame but I am not sure how well it would hold, but it might be enough to lessen or eliminate the set screw marks. One item that you may have to pay attention to is the orientation of the brackets. Mine are at an angle (non Moss ones) and if put on wrong interfere with the side curtains. Maybe the Moss ones are not dependent on that. |

Mine are also at an angle. Here's a picture from the inside of the car. I haven't installed the hood or side curtains but I suspect that mine will interfere with the side curtain frame. Jud ![]() |

Here's from the outside. BTW, the white wire to the wiper motor is no longer there and the windscreen support has been replaced with one that doesn't have a bunged up pivot stud. O, and "Yes," the set screw mucks up the chrome. Jud ![]() |

Rich, You might want to check for burrs or any sharp edges on the set screws that might cut into the chrome, just file them smooth,, SPW |

Jud: You have the same side curtains as I do (I think they are AMCO?). You have them mounted correctly and they will not interfere. |

Set screws with an inserted brass or nylon tip are available from McMaster Carr. http://www.mcmaster.com/#set-screws/=q1rhyz 90291A826 I have been using the 1/4-20 version of these on my lathes and Milling machine in the areas where I did not want to make marks. They hold slightly less secure than the cup points but sufficient to fix a dial to a shaft. I am going to order some for the wind wings. Jim B. |

Correction 90669A337. This is a brass Tip. The previous number was a nylon tip. Jim B. |

(I think they are AMCO?). I couldn't remember what was embossed on the plastic but your post brought it to mind. Yup, that's what I have. Thanks, Jud |

I went ahead and put them on knob up! I am not worried about the set screw marking the windshield frame I will probably never take them off. Thanks for the help everyone! Rich www.mgtd.co.nr ![]() |
