MG TD TF 1500 - Windshield Mounting
Hello, I am totally confused how this happened, but I had new glass installed in my windshield frame and everything looks proper as the miters on the frame lines up very well. The problem now is I am remounting the windshield assembly on the car and the width of the entire assembly is around .400 inch narrower than the width between standing cowl brackets. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, what is the proper fix? I hate to shim the threaded studs on the windshield assembly but don't know what else to do.
thanks in advance Bill Brown TD/24570 |

That is a bit odd. The width of the windshield does not change when you change the glass. Did you remove one or both brackets when you removed the windshield? Issue has to be in the bracket. |

Hi Bruce, Thanks for your response. It is very crazy. I just removed the housing on the Left side. It appears if the lower rail on the windshield was moved up that would may the windshield somewhat wider but I don't it would be enough. I'll just fiddle a bit more and see what happens. thanks, Bill Brown TD/24570 ![]() ![]() |

There are a few things that can cause this. Can you post pictures of the lower corners in detail? What I am looking for is that the inside corners meet up vs the outside corners. Also did you replace the cowl brackets? New ones may have a different alignment than the originals. |

Bill, I don't suppose you've inadvertently interchanged the top and bottom strips? John. |

Christopher as you can see the miter is off somewhat but I don't believe enough to take up the gap if adjusted. Cowl brackets are the original along with the internal corner brackets with the tapped screw holes. I have had this TD since 1964. JP, no the upper and lower bars are not reversed. This making this old man think too hard. thanks for your interest. Bill TD/24570 ![]() ![]() |

It does not look like a significant difference between the miter location but I think you could pick up may 1/8" each side.
On the inside threaded brackets at the bottom: When you had the windshield rechromed did you leave the brackets attached to the bottom from when you had it rechromed or did you remove them? If you removed them its possible that this would change the gap based on the orientation and side to side placement. If you left them on (recommended) then that obviously is not a consideration. And of course I have to ask the stupid question but I am not sure if it would make any difference: Are the holes for the Auster emblem on the inside of the windscreen? |

Christopher, everything was disassembled during chroming. Isn't the inner bracket with the tapped holes going to determine the corner alignment or is there enough slop for a little adjustment? Inner brackets are original. I had a fellow that owns a glass shop install the glass for me so there may be something else going on, I'm not aware of. I done the one prior, that's the reason I farmed this out. thank you for your help, Bill TD/24570 |

The only thing that can alter the length is distortion, that is that the bottom frame curve is wrong. Polishers can be quite brutal at chromers Ray TF2884 |

You could try playing around with the bottom inner brackets to see if you could find a combination that widened the frame a bit. As Ray stated the width at the bottom is set by the curve of the bottom member, but also the location of the miters. Bending that bottom piece is pretty hard to do. At this point why don't you measure the bottom distance and lets see if someone can confirm that distance on their car. ATTM I am unable to access my car to check for you. |
