MG TD TF 1500 - Windshield questions

How do you remove the Auster tag without damaging it?

Also, my windshield has 4 machine screws with nuts on the inside on the top frame. What was used in these from the factory?

Bruce Cunha

You have to carefully tap them out from the inside. The Auster is very soft and you cannot pry under it without doing harm.

The factory used a head best described as a round-pan. The nuts were also taller than a normal nut.

Christopher Couper

Chris, do you know who has chrome ones?
Bruce Cunha

I think Peter Hehir chased these down last year. Perhaps he will post his info here.
Christopher Couper

These came from Classic Fasteners in South Australia about three or four years ago. They were in SS not chrome and from memory I think they had a metric thread. I wasn't able to find the taller nuts. Still unable to upload any pics. I've recently changed my modem, could that cause the recognition problem? Cheers

Thanks all. Peter. If you happen to be able to get the Size and lenth of the bolt and nut, I will do some looking here in the US.

So on to another topic that cropped up today. Who has the best (most correct) set of windshield screws for the TD windshield?

I had a conversation with Moss today. Their kit shows 6 2BA by 5/8 tapered machine screws. I show 8 needed. 4 on each side piller. My side piller has 4 taperd holes. I guess the question should be does each hole get a screw?

They also have 4 slotted screws. Where do these go?

What are the brass screws for?

Bruce Cunha

These pictures should help. The two brass flat head go on the support where it will be hidden covered by the bracket while the longer phillips as you can see are exposed.

2.

Not sure this will help you since my windshield had more smaller flat head screws than your kit.

I put my windshield together without glass to see where all the screws go and to make sure the lengths didn't protrude too far to possibly crack the glass.

Just make sure when you're done that no flat heads are exposed. Any screws seen were not covered by brackets or supports are phillips.

last one.

one more...

The stubby flat heads on the top of your picture look to me to go in the channel where they are fastened to the L bracket inside the windshield frame (item 92) on the corners and the strip installed vertically (item number 91 on the Moss windshield webpage) .

Tried to enlarge.... eh

You can see the yellow arrows.

As Frank points out the short flat heads hold the L bracket on the top sides. The other flat heads are the bottom of the side brackets.

Rule of thumb: The flat heads are uses where some other part lays over the part and will be hidden. The longer flat headed screws need to be flush because when mounted on the car the windshield brackets rest up against these.

Having said all of this the Moss screws are of the correct shape but they are not Philips screw heads. Those are Pozi screws and you can tell because the slots are wider/deeper and the giveaway is the dashes between the cuts.

If you get them replated you might be able to buff off the dashes which would help a lot.

Ok. Any better kits out there? NKG? B&G? Abingdon?

I can call each and get a better itea.

Here is another question. The top fram has what appear to be lead spacers that go in the wiper area (L and R) and the two holes to the left and right of center.

Can't find these anywhere. Got to say. Most of the merchants sure do a poor job on finding windshield parts.

Here is a picture of the spacers. It looks like they were supplied in strips and they cut them in half to make the two center ones.

If no one knows where I can find these, I will make a mold and turn out some.
