MG TD TF 1500 - Windshield replacement

I am new here and forgive me if I missed any threads involving Windshields. My question concerns weather stripping. I'm replacing the glass and need to know if put the strip between the frame and brackets & spacers or between the spacers/brackets and windshield. I'm restoring a 1950 TD.

CJ, don't know the answer to your question 'cause that's something I've been procrastinating on but Welcome Aboard! That's a really good looking chasis. Post more pica.

Please post more pics CJ! When I pulled mine apart the rubber was continuous with the join @ the bottom centre, but cut out to fit around the thickened bits inside the frame where the wiper motor, idler arm, corners etc & cable securing clips were fitted. I plan to reassemble it the same way. Just waiting on some stencils I'm having remade (manufacturing boo boo), so I can media etch the original date correct Triplex logo onto the glass before I reassemble the windscreen. My safety glass was made to measure from a cardboard template ensuring there is room for the wiper cable where it travels inside the frame & also clears the corner & staunchion brackets. Once assembled I'll then trim any excess rubber. Cheers

The glass edge should be covered with the weather strip right around its perimeter edge so no glass touches any steel or framing.

The proper rubber for this purpose usually bonds to the surfaces, glass and chrome. Its trimmed/cut after fitting and screwing the frame together, back to the chrome edges.

If the proper rubber is not available its a good idea to first run some black insulation plastic tape over the edge of the laminated glass to assist prevention of ingress of moisture.
Rod Brayshaw

Throw the rubber away and use black silicone sealant. Grease the glass first in case you need to pull it apart again. Using the original rubber is an awful job and you may have to use large clamps to pull everything together and risk breaking the glass. Best to spend time masking the frame and glass otherwise the sealant will get everywhere.

Some comments on my windscreen replacement.

My daughters boyfriend, a professional glass replacement man, obtained the glass and cut the glass to size. He partially installed it but ran out of packing.

I disassembled the old one and cleaned things up. I replaced one horizontal section of packing and dis the final assembly.

I purchased packing both from Abingdon and Moss.

There is an issue with modern glass. Some may be metric and not inch. The metric is thinner. If you get metric the Abingdon packing works. If you get Inch size the Moss works. The Abingdon did not fit my glass which was inch sized. (On purpose).

Under the packing is additional packing or spacers. This consists of the Moss type of packing, folded on itself three times. This packing should not extend the entire length.
There should be large gaps between approximately 6" pieces.

I used the Moss Packing for these spacers and the is why we were short on the top of the frame.

So if you are replacing the folded packing/spacers buy 2 rolls of packing.

When disassembling Be careful to note which screws go where.
There are several different length screws and they should not protrude more than a turn or two, ON THE INSIDE, from the brackets when tight.

I had to drill out several screws and the bottom brackets where corrosion has set in. I had to replace the bottom inside corner brackets.

There is a lot in the archives about these screws.

I made mine from 10-32 SS. This requires cutting down the head as well as trimming them to the proper length.

Standard screw heads will protrude into the rubber drought eliminator channel.
They also do not look correct where they are exposed on the side and top, unless the heads are trimmed.

I bought a full thickness (1/4") glass from www.theframeup.com and its waiting to be installed this week. I have to etch the glass first. I will let you all know how it works out next weekend.

Prior installs with the metric glass were a pain. Best solution I found was getting a thick rubber/cork based gasket that filled up the extra width. Hopefully with the full dimensional glass it can go back with the thin rubber.

Here are a couple of pictures of putting the glass in the frame for my TD. The first one is a picture of the old glass being removed. I used Dave Braun's method for holding the frame upside down and vertical to make it easier to work.

This picture shows how the gasket material is held in place. I used masking tape to position the gasket and make sure it was smooth all the way around.

Just as a reminder, make sure you put the windscreen wiper wire in place before you do final assemble. Undoing everything after it has been put together is not much fun (don't ask how I know).

Lastly, this is a picture of the windscreen reassembled before trimming the gasket.

I don't remember the width of the glass. I believe I used the Moss gasket material.

I hope these help.

Patrick: What are you using for wiper motor wire? I looks pretty close to original.
Christopher Couper

Chistopher,

I believe I bought it from Moss but not 100% positive. I'm sure I used the archives on this BB to locate where to get the correct wire.

It looks like the shielded 2-wire com cable that is sold by Abingdon Spares. Externally it looks like the OEM cable. It functions very well if the two inner wires are connected together to function as one wire and the shield is used as the other wire. Bud

Patrick: Does yours have the shield as Bud describes or just two vinyl coated wires?
