MG TD TF 1500 - Wing / Fender Bolts by
Looks as though I have made two mistakes. Firstly I have fitted the wings to my TF with stainless, hex headed bolts and stainless penny washers. They look great but I have just been told that I should have used Philips headed bolts rather than hexagons. Secondly my wings are unused, original items without holes for the running boards. The latter are also new (purchased from Sports Car Metalworks - superb quality and reasonable prices) and didn't have the wing to running board bolt holes either. I have drilled one hole for the rear bolt and two for the front. Unfortunately I now believe there should be three bolts at the front. Can anyone advise please. Jan T PS. Guess what I will looking for on the TFs at Silverstone this year! |

Good day Jan, et al: Firstly; I did not know the wings of a TF were held on by Phillips styled fasteners, Are they hex or round head items ? Secondly; by "penny washers" I suspect that is a reference to their size, comparing them to the British One Penny in the "old money" system. They call the large washers "fender washers" on this side of the "pond". And, as the N.A. one cent, both Canada and the U.S. of A., is lesser in diameter than the old British farthing the actual size of your description may have been confusing to some. (Canada used a large One Cent coin up until King George V took the Throne around 1911. By-the-by; the one cent coin was removed from our monetary system in 2013.) The TD used hex head bolts to fasten the wings, but it used Round head Phillips machine screws to secure the front valance (splash apron) to the frame. Also, the six screws fastening the windscreen lower supports were Phillips head and a change from the TC which used slot heads. Right then, I've nattered on long enough ! Cheers all; respectfully: Jack Emdall, TC6768/TD3191, Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia, Canada |

Jan Good advice here on "bolts from fender to running board". Before you remove your front wings/fenders, do more research. Take a look at "T Talk by Bud Krueger". He posts a list of all the nuts, bolts and screws for the TF. What you initially described, sounds correct to me. Tom '54 TF |

Quotes from the official BMC Workshop Manual:- Section R6 Removal and Replacement Rear Wings TD "Remove the nuts, screws and flat washers on early models and Phillips screws and flat and spring washers on later models" Section R7 Removal and Replacement Running Boards TD "Remove the three nuts, bolts and spring and flat washers securing the running board to the front wing" Maybe a little OTT but I wonder how many concourse cars are traveling around with hex bolts and no spring washers! Must admit I am using stainless, hex bolts - I don't want them to rust and I don't want chewed up screwdriver slots. Jan T |

I guess I have to do some reading! I don't understand just what screws/bolts are to be Phillips heads. All my fender bolts were hex heads! Are you talking about the vented inspection covers? Phillips screws to hold fenders on! Never heard of that. PJ |

I've got an un-restored 1500 in the shop and the fenders are held on with bolts, not Phillips-head screws. Seems unlikely that "even-later" TF1500's would have screws. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

The fender fasteners on a TF are 5/16 BSF hex head Screws Threaded all the way. Fender washers, lock washers and nuts on most. The inspection panels are #10 phillips sheet metal screws (US Size) My running boards use 2 front and 1 rear 5/16 BSF TF 1500 #8986 |
