MG TD TF 1500 - Wiper arm spindle lock set screw
My wiper spindles that go on the shafts protruding in front of the windshield have small hex head bolts in them, look to be 2BA? Aren't these supposed to be sunken set screws? The bolts don't look normal. PJ |

I'm corn fuseded Paul...are you talking about the threaded opening in the shaft itself? This would be facing the cockpit and the are used to secure the knobs to the shaft and yes the take a screw. No opening in the shafts that protrude above the cowl. |
MG LaVerne |
No LaVerne, I don't have a pic right now, but what I have is two collars/adapters, that go on the wiper shaft outside in front of the windshield that lock on with a set screw and the wiper arm attaches to that. I'll get a photo if necessary. PJ |

I think I understand now Paul. You are talking about the wiper arm itself. I have some old arms with the "set screw collar" ...they actually have the hex bolt head. I did not use them as the blades were toast. I ordered some replacement and they are secured with an split compression nut over the shaft so they have no set screw. You'd have to quiz the originality experts about which is correct....if either. |

Here's what I'm speaking of. The bolts look like an after thought. PJ![]() |

On the same page now Paul..here is an old one I have

Your opening looks a little more engineered than this one.

LaVerne, my TD has the same compression nut system and it does not lock on the shaft very well and slips. I got them for Moss also. Bill TD24570 |

Much as I hate to say it, the ones I got from Moss just won't stay snug. I leave them on because they are shinier, they match each other (my old ones, maybe NOS, were one front nut and one rear nut whatever that means) and I avoid ever having to actually use the wipers. Jud |

Never took my new arms out of the package until yesterday and found they have the tension nuts as LaVernes does. Not original design, but I'll see if they hold when mounted. I saw the original style arms somewhere. PJ |

They look like adaptors to fit the later push on wiper arms. Early Landrovers used them. Ray TF 2884 |

I'm pretty sure they came from your side of the pond Ray. Did the late TDs have these or just the TFs? PJ |
Paul S Jennings |
Hi Paul, as far as I know these were not OE. I am sure that they were just sold as adaptors to fit the later clip on arms. I used these years ago to fit Morgan arms on the TF as T Type parts were scarce here in he early 70's Just checked. www.lrseries.com Landrover part. part number STC987 wiper arm to spindle adaptor. As Landrovers are Military vehicles I would think these are substantial. How did we find things before the Web!!! Ray TF 2884 |

Ray, So what your saying is, the the arms that have the jamb nuts are the proper arms, such as the ones Moss sells? PJ |
Paul S Jennings |
Yes, split taper collars (collets) and compression nut .In this one the taper collet is sprung into the compression nut, normally they are separate. I have found it is best to use a hacksaw blade to open up the slot as it help the grip on the shaft. Also the blade on this one slides in the housing to give different lengths. It is marked on the rear in 1/4" increments from 5" to 7" Ray ![]() |

PS, I also have to use shim brass on my passenger side as the shaft is worn and wont grip without it. You think twice before you consider trying to get a TF wiper shaft out. If you have any sort of back problem you are going to out of action for some time after. Ray |
