MG TD TF 1500 - Wiper Knob Grub/Set Screws
Anyone know what the grub/lock screw for the TF wiper knob thread and size is? I actually need 2. PJ
Paul S Jennings
Most likely a 2BA screw - if larger than that then a 1/4 BSF, smaller would be a 4BA. Cheers - Dave

Hi Paul, I don't think the knob is threaded. A 4BA machine screw goes through the hole in the knob and this screw is threaded into a hole in the wiper gearbox shaft. At least that is what I have on mine. Cheers, Hugh

PJ Can you put up a picture of your knob I also may have one but am not sure if it is TF or not. Just one of the many things I have in my box of bit collected over the years. Hopefuly not all just left over bits :) Rod

Wiper knobs on my TF are secured with a cheese head screw, thread profile unknown without radical dismantling. I believe these are original. The knobs are not threaded, the screw head is captive in a recess and secured via the thread in the gearbox shaft. Graeme

Thanks guys, much appreciated information! Rod, I'll get a photo of it later today and post it. Believe it or not, I haven't yet compared the repo to my original. Later today. PJ

Hi guys Here is a photo of a knob and its set screw. Yes, the knob has no threads. It attaches like Hugh states. Tom '54 TF

If that is the correct screw, it is a 2BA, the same as used on the SU fuel pumps to hold the coil housing to the pump body. Cheers - Dave

Here is a picture of a 4 BA machine screw threaded into the hole in a wiper gearbox shaft. I think 2 BA is too large to thread into the 1/4" shaft and have any strength left. Hugh Pite

Tom, Here's the repo. PJ

where can the correct screws be bought?

If if is a 4BA, and I can't guarantee that, then its very close to a UNF 6-40. The 4BA has dimensions of 0.142 by 38.5 TPI The 6-40 had dimensions of 0.138 by 40 TPI. While not common, you can get panhead 6-40 screws at McMasters. http://www.mcmaster.com/#machine-screws/=tht285 On my TD I did find some 5BA screws. I think, but I am not sure it might have been on the Wiper Motor. The UNC 5-40 is a good enough fit for these. 5ba is 0.126 by 43 TPI 5-40 UNC is 0.125" by 40 TPI. If it is a 5BA a 1/8 drill should just fit in the threaded hole. If it is a 4BA a number 29 drill should just fit Should it be a 5BA I have a box of 5-40 by 1/4" long and I would be more than happy to send a few. Jim B.

Paul, the repro is a great likeness of the original. I believe mine are original. They have the brown hue of bakelite. It is a simple design. It seems someone could make a mold and reproduce some. Anyone have a 3D printer? It seems that this one TF part is unobtainable. I sure would like to have an extra. Anyone out there have the capability to make some? Tom '54 TF

British Tools & Fasteners has these in 4BA X 1/2 inch. Are they what I need? PJ
Paul S Jennings
Paul The screw in my photo above is 1/2 inch. Tom

Thanks Tom, I'll order a couple. PJ
