MG TD TF 1500 - Wiper Motor Seized?

I've just connected up what I believe to be a NOS wiper motor and it seems to have seized solid.
I had power to the terminals ok, so I removed the rear cover, am I right in thinking that the commutator should spin freely with the locking pin disingaged?

...remove the other cover and see what the grease looks like....

Frequently, when a motor has sat for years, there may be just that has formed between the armature and the field coils. Also, the armature shaft may have seized in its bushing in the body.
Whatever you do, don't keep trying it with power applied until the armature spins freely. Otherwise you risk burning out the shunt windings on the armature. That will severely reduce the power of the motor.
My best suggestion is to strip it down and relubricate all the moving parts - bushings, gears, etc. and gently remove any rust found.
These are fragile motors, but will work well if they are kept clean and lubricated.

A little cleaning and oiling, it'll come around.

I had a quick look at the grease, it's still 'greasy' so I'll try stripping her down this evening, thanks for the advice.
CJ Harvey

I meant "rust that has formed" not "just that has formed".

I stripped it down and it turned out to be very solid grease on the communtator bearing, all back together again and working well, thanks for the good advice.
CJ Harvey

Good job! That is usually where the lubrication goes hard first.
Lew Palmer

What is the recommended grease for the motor after all the solid stuff and whatever else you find has been removed? I can envision the wrong grease dripping down on the dash panel on a nice hot day.

i used white lithium with not adverse issues after 8 years. regards, tom

My TF wiper motor stopped working last autumn. When taking it apart I found the interior was filled up with corrosice aluminium debris. I thought all hope was lost, but after cleaning up all parts, and lubricating the bearings it now works better thean ever.

Thanks Tom, for the grease info.

Make sure the grease used is a LIGHTWEIGHT white lithium. I like using Lubriplate on wiper motors I rebuild.
