MG TD TF 1500 - Wiring Loom Braiding
I mentioned in a previous post that I have made up a new heavy duty wiring loom with additional fuses and relays. I was going to have this cloth braided but the cost was over £3 per foot! I toyed with wrapping it black plastic loom tape but then found something called Tesa Tape and it is absolutely fantastic!!!! It is made from black cloth with a sticky backing. When wrapped around the wires and smoothed down it looks almost like the original braiding but without the flecks. I can live without these since enough tape to do the entire loom has cost me £5. One of the big advantages you can add or remove braiding at the ends of the tails in the loom so it stops just before terminals and the like. I think it could be used to repair damaged braiding on an original loom. Jan T |

Jan, Which Tesa tape did you use? Tesa makes dozens of different tapes. |

Jan: Is this the stuff you used?

Used to call it friction tape when I was a kid. Just did a TC harness. Got it at Lowes electrical department. Brian |

I've used this friction tape to repair frayed sections of wiring looms quite successfully. Even cheated and duplicated the red flecks with a series of dabs of red paint applied with a small brush.

Hi Chris, Yep that was exactly the stuff I used. I spent a very enjoyable weekend, with the car out in the sun, wrapping the loom. As I said previously the stuff is great since you can add extra bits at the end of branches and the wrap it really tightly to produce an excellent finish. It was really satisfying to make tight "Y" branches. I also made clips to attach the loom to the body out of thin aluminium which I slipped into pieces of hot shrink sleeving. When warmed they looked very professional. Jan T |
