MG TD TF 1500 - Wood Spacer *Tapered*

Having a problem with attaching the hoop bracket not laying right. Does the tapered wood spacer go on with the thicker part at the top or bottom? Didn't take a recent picture, have to use an old one. The metal brackets seem to be on an angle and won't bolt up without forcing them. When they came off, there was no pressure on them, but I cant remember just how the wooden block laid against the other wood.

If I have to remove those blocks to readjust, I have to be very careful not to move the bolts as the heads are painted on the outside. PJ

My TD doesn't have any wood wedges. Are you sure they don't need to be swapped sides and get rid of the wedges.
W. A. Chasser Jr

These are on my TF and before I disturb them, I just want to make sure they need to be moved. I know there is someone who knows which way they go. The tub is freshly painted and I don't want to break these carriage bolts loose and disturb the painted heads if not needed. PJ

Bill, TFs are different from TDs in a number of ways. This may well be one of those differences. Looking at the Abingdon Spares Coachwork layout I see an item of wood called a "Shim Piece" in that vicinity. No such piece on a TD. Bud
Bud Krueger

Bud, they are also handed, due to being curved on the outside and tapered from one end to the other, which is where my question originated. Which is top and which is bottom? PJ
Paul S Jennings

Catalog shows L/H & R/H. Looks as if there's a curved notch in the upper, outside corner. Might that help? Bud
Bud Krueger

Thanks Bud. I don't know enough to tell a TD from a TF cowl. Sorry for suggesting mis information

No problem, Bill. I'm forever getting into trouble by applying TD specifics to TFs. Bud

BTW looking at the Moss TF wood image and the A/S image seems to give a decent indication of how the piece(s) are installed. Moss' sketch looks as if the thinner edge is at the top, but I'm just guessing. Bud

I found some pre and during restoration pictures of that area on my TD. One side had the bracket behind the hoop tab, and the other in front of the tab. Not sure if it was that way originally, but I recall it fit best like that. George

Paul, for TF the taper is at the top, confirmed, TD's do not have these at all.

I note the steel bracket in your image that bolts to this tapered wood section is on the rear of the roll hoop where most TF's I have had it fits on the front side of the chassis hoop?

I recall seeing this image of yours before and noticed the brackets are one back LHS and on the RHS on the front?
Rod Brayshaw

Thanks Rod. Yes I agree that they fit better on the front, the photo shows how they were when I got the car, on the back. The tapered pieces of wood are in correctly if the thin part is at the top and I'll try putting the brackets in front of the hoop and see how they fit. For some reason they just don't seem to lay evenly, reason I thought the tapered pieces were in upside down, or actually on the wrong side. It's a pain working on these now as I have to be super careful of the new paint and covering everything as I go. PJ

Rod, when I dismantled my TF the steel brackets were the same as Paul's, at the back LHS and in front RHS. No evidence the body had ever been off before (the condition of the wood proved that).

Paul, I sometimes think I can nick my paint just by walking by it. Lol I have decided once it is ready for the road I will take it to a detail specialist and let him cover up all the dings and start anew.

My car was such a cobbled up mess with odd length and odd ball thread bolts everywhere, it's been a real task getting the right new proper bolts and in the right position. Taping out screwed up threads back to BSF. This is the reason I trust nothing on this car when I got it. Hard to believe it's a matching number car, but it is. Perseverance is getting it back where it belongs. I've actually walked away from it a few times and came back a week or so later. PJ

Ian, the last TF 1500 body I finished just last month had the brackets on the roll hoop the same. I just assumed it was a PO error, but now three this way so far, it could have been factory, possibly careless fitting on the assembly line.
Rod Brayshaw

I think Murphy's Law applies TWICE to all MGs... I'm constantly finding the oddest mismatches, from past POs tinkering to poor shop repair (put anything in that fits, quick!) to dealer aftermarket add-ons to original factory mistakes...

PJ, working on my tub now. Here's the original spacers. I never took them off.

Thanks Frank, That explains it all! That's how mine are mounted. One of those things I didn't remember just how they went in, but for some strange reason I got them right! Grin. PJ
