MG TD TF 1500 - World Wide Auto Problem - Shocks

Problem/Question

Based on what I have read here and other sites World Wide Auto Parts seemed like a very good place to have my TF shocks rebuilt. Well, that is in debate as of this writing.

My problem is they returned someone else's shocks. I stamped mine on the bottom for this very reason, so I know these are not mine. Additionally the shocks I received have a much thinner bolting flange (approx. 1/4 inch) which make the bolts to long and may have an effect on the control arm travel. They do not fit flat to the mounting pads and I am quite concerned about using them should WW refuse to return the correct pieces.

I'm sure I am not the first guy to have this happen. Have any of you folks had to deal with this issue before and what are my options should WW refuse to make this right?

Thanks, Dan

Dan - Contact Peter at (800) 362-1025 or (608) 223-9400 and tell him what has happened. Did you tell them that you wanted the same shocks back? I believe that you need to do that in order to get them back, but regardless, Peter will do his best to get the original shocks back to you. World Wide is one business that I have absolute confidence in. Cheers - Dave

Thanks Dave

WW has QA form that must accompany the shocks went sent for rebuild This form asks various questions including: Do you want THESE shocks rebuilt and returned. I marked "yes".

We will see how and "IF" they can produce mine. It has been several days since the shipped.

Dan

Peter recently rebuilt my shocks and went the extra mile to help me out. I'm sure it's just a mis understanding and that he will do what he can to help you out.

Chris.

Dan,
I have had nothing but good service from World Wide...perhaps you should try to contact them and give them a chance to rectify a problem before you make a shout out to complain of their service....
Bob Dougherty

Bob, Thank you for your thoughts.

I have indeed reached out to WW and am awaiting a response. My intent, if not clear, was/is to ask this group for advice from their experiences. If WW has shipped my shocks to someone else what do you think the odds of me getting mine back are? If not clear in my original post it was to determine what my options are should I have the opportunity to speak with WW. That way I will better prepared to chat.

btw, after exploring the archives this is not the first time there have been similar problems.

It was not my intent to shout a bunch of negative comments without giving them a chance to make it right. I am sorry if that was the way this question was received.

I repaired the TF's shockabsorbers myself. The fault was fluid leaking from the casings where the shaft fits through. Unfortunately whilst new seals cost pence the shafts had rusted/scored where the lips of the seals touch. However I found that the cutters used to sink the circular, self close, hinges into kitchen cabinet doors are exactly the right size to drop the seals slightly so they run on a smooth section of shaft. They cut into aluminium easily and self align on the original bores in the casting. I have had no problems as YET!

I was asked if I wanted my shocks back, if I did, it would take a little longer. I got my original ones back, I think I waited an additional week. PJ

I forgot to add, I spoke with peter on the phone, not their web site, if that means anything. He even painted them as I requested, natural case and black arms. PJ

Paul,

Your shocks look just like the ones I sent in for rebuild. Could you take a couple of measurements for me please? I would like to know the flange thickness and the bottom of flange to center of pivot shaft.

Dan
Dan Nordstrom

Dan, Don't hold me to the exact measurement, but should be within 1/64th of an inch.

Flange thickness is 3/8ths" thick & from the bottom of the case to center of the shaft is 1&11/16ths"
Kinda hard to get my calipers on a perfect vertical angle while the shock is mounted. PJ

Ditto on the great service from Peter.

This issue has ended. I have dropped my pursuit of the ones I sent in as I am unable to prove I stamped the bottoms. (no picture was taken - my bad) I did receive TF shocks that are correct to the car so with a few new shorter bolts these will do the job.

I have to say that Jane at WW was very polite and respectful throughout our exchanges.

Many more important things in life to worry about than a couple of shocks. All is well and right with the world.

Thank you all for your comments.
