MG TD TF 1500 - WTB Smiths Radiomobile, HMV, Emitron

I’m am looking for Smith & Sons; His Masters Voice (HMV) or Emitron (US Version that were dealer installed) radios. Complete originals, restored, parts or unwanted spares. Preferably Model 100 or 101. Possibly 4100 and 4200, I’m unclear on the latter two. While looking at “the Original MGTD” site’s literature section it shows in the installation diagram clearly marked “4100”. I’m also looking for factory literature including sales brochures specific to MGTD, installation instructions, and repair/service manuals to add to my library. I would gladly accept scanned copies as well. Still looking for any complete original or restored, parts or unwanted spares.

I am lacking mounting brackets for both the radio and power head, both volume /tuner knobs and a faceplate for a radio that will still require extensive restoration. Any and all considered.

I am looking for a radio restoration shop to repair this pile of parts into a working radio as well. These are beyond my knowledge and skill to repair. Wishing dear old dad was still around to fix it.

Please, your expertise with this important final link to completing his car would be greatly appreciated

Bill,

I have the model 100 fitted to my car. Check my thread in the archives entitled "Period car radio" This is dated 2013, (I hope that the person is still around). I can send to your email address a cleaned version of the service manual for the 100 & 101

John

I got scans of 18 pages of the mdl 100 installation and service booklets from John Scragg’s today. Thank you John I’ll see if I can find it... Below is a redacted reply I sent to John along with further text supplied here.

“Last night I unpacked the radio I received from Frank Filangeri several years ago. At first glance, I was disappointed to realize that it was a model 4202.

From what I could gather on the internet the 4200 series was introduced in 1951 -54. The 4202 was for use in North and South America because of the bandwidth used.

Two amplifiers were used with the 4200 series tuners. The first is model # 46028A which powers a single external speaker and the more powerful 46028B which can handle 1-2 external speaker(s). Mine has a 46028B amplifier powering a single speaker. It is complete including the external wiring and speaker/grill assembly but minus the amplifier and tuner mounting brackets. It will require extensive restoration but it is period correct for dad’s ‘51 MK II.

Though I see that the mdl 100/101 where available for the TCs and mounted under the center dash, I question whether this particular model actually made it to the TDs. This is because of the radio’s built in speaker residing below the tuner. I would think it would be quite ineffective unless one travelled with the glove box door open during operation. Also, I note on my original underdash panels there is a round perforation directly above the transmission tunnel that would be knocked out to mount an external speaker. If one looks carefully at the Radiomobile mounting instructions the tuner head in the drawing is referenced as a mdl 4100. One could also assume the 4102 as well. Both being the subsequent models to the HMV 100 series tuners”. Likewise, the 4100/4102 tuners also have the speaker mounted integral to the tuner chassis.

The dealer installed radios for the North, Central and South American Markets wore the Emitron name with the same series #s as a the Factory and dealer installed units for all other markets.

If anyone has any of these radios installed in their TDs globally, I’d like to talk to you and possibly clear up my confusion as to what may have really been original equipment.

I also welcome comments here to add to the discussion for everyone’s benefit.

Bill: Their is some related discussion in this Jag forum that might help you too

And Hemmings had this article:

https://www.hemmings.com/magazine/hsx/2016/12/Radiomobile/3750338.html

If anyone can supply the missing pages for the owners manual the site would appreciate it.

Thanks Chris. Both links were where I was gleaning the information from. There just isn’t a great deal of info out there on the web to work with.

John sent a further reply to me this morning and I’m still picking his brain. I’ll add it to this discussion if it seems fitting.

Just another interesting piece of the MG TD Puzzle.

Given the number of TD's still around, it is really sad that we do not have good data on these cars.

Bill,
I have available a Motorola model 401A radio with the TD glovebox mount. Restored including all the electronic components. Contact me if interested.

I found another service manual for the 4200 out of AU but the link cannot be posted. I will put it up on the web later.

Found this web page from the Radiomuseum in Switzerland. They have pictures of some of the Radiomobile units, including the 100 and the 4010

Hey, Bill -

If you google "HMV vintage car radio" you'll get a bunch of stuff.

Just my two cents.

I have been in touch with a gentleman in the UK who should be able to help me in my quest for a Radiomobile Model 100 in restored condition. When the deal can be sealed I will add more information and give credit to those involved. More to come.

I now have to S Smith & Sons Radiomobile HMV 100s on their way

Wow my radios arrived three days after being shipped from the UK. UPSidedown didn’t even ding me customs fees. Total price for two restored radios and shipping $601 USD.

Can any one share pics of their installations. I need to know what the tuner mounting brackets behind the dash look like. I have the L brackets bolted to the sub dash on either side of the glovebox. I’m speaking of the rest of the bracketry Also how the tuner is supported at the rear. Does anyone have or can make a template for the faceplate surround and any of the mounting brackets. I want to try in keeping to the original design.

W A Chasser

This pic was sent to me. I oils use a template or I am willing to buy an original along with all the tuners supporting bracketry

I am really envious. Did the seller have any more?

Do you need the other bracket I have?

Bruce Cunha

Bill,

This illustration from the operation manual is all I had to work with. For my spares, I have just received a solid state and a mechanical vibrator from the same source. I also have a complete set of valves (Tubes).

Bruce,

Arthur, the seller, has at least another dozen units available.

John

J Scragg

Here is the illustration

J Scragg

Thanks John. You or art had sent this pic recently. Does the front fascia surround that you made mount directly to the L brackets on either side of the glove box opening or does it float in the remnants of a cut out glove box? Do you have any pics of the tuner’s supporting brackets? I’m really unclear how this gets hung under the scuttle.

Willem,

The button you are missing should be marked with the two letters "SP". I am sure the Bill's contact will have one. I suggest that you also buy a solid state vibrator from the same source.

Bill,

UPS doesn’t collect customs fees. Expect a letter later from Customs asking for the monies.

Gene
Gene Gillam

Gene I have had UPS collect customs fees from me at my doorstep before they would release a package on two occasions.

Willem, I have a speech (SP) button coming my way. He sent it off before I could coordinate a direct shipment to you. Email me your information and I’ll send it back over the pond to you when it arrives here.

John Scragg , did you read the last post I directed to you above? Also, check your email as I sent you more mounting questions a few weeks ago.

Bill Chasser

Bill,

You may well be right...I was thinking of DHL when they delivered my transmission from Hi-Gear. It was several weeks later when I got a letter saying I owed X amount for customs fees on the shipment.

Gene
Gene Gillam

Customs fees seem to be indiscriminate. I have ordered many item from across the pond. Some items of the same product in multiple shipments at later dates. One time it got dinged and another time it didn’t. IDK what flagged an item and what didn’t. I presumed it was the value. Ie my header/intake manifold from Steve Baker and my billet engine pieces from B&G. but that idea was thrown out the window when one shipment of bulk BSF hardware also came from the UK. The first shipment taxed. The second identical shipment wasn’t. But now we are getting away from the HMV OP.

I’m still looking to purchase period HMV radios. Models 100, 101, 4100 series and 4200 series. All pieces complete or partials, bits considered. Foreign and domestic bandwidths
