MG TD TF 1500 - XPAG - Oil & Water Mix ?

I have an early XPAG with water in the oil AND lots of oil in the water. No water showing above the core.

In my experience you usually get one or the other, not both ?.

Can anyone suggest a failure point that could result in both (apart from sabotage) ?.

The car has done very little mileage since June, when all appeared ok with daily oil & water checks.

The level in the dipstick is not high enough to suggest all the missing water has gone there.

I will do a compression test later today & report back.

I am keen to do a measured diagnosis, before breaking into an engine remove & strip down.

Thanks in anticipation,

Tony

This can only come about if an oil gallery & a water jacket are now in contact with each other. The compression test should confirm or rule out a blown head gasket. Could the plug at the rear of the head possibly be leaking? Cheers

At the rear of the cylinder head is a plate to the water space, under this there is a plug screwed into the oil feed to the rockers check this is tight. The original gasket covered this and gave some protection but some new ones don't.
If it is not the head gasket then I would suspect this.

Likely headgasket. Compression may be fine, leak could be between water passage and tappet/pushrod area. Has happened twice on my car over the years. George

I have experianced the heart stopping site of oil /coolant mix in my rad. Thanks to advice from MG Guru Bob Grunau It was tracked to the oil passage screw in the head which had backed out As Ray mentioned.
Remove the back head plate , check the screw.
I hope thats all it is for you.

What was the outcome Tony? Wondered if 'Could the plug at the rear of the head possibly be leaking?' as suggested in my post above was the cause? Cheers
