Triumph TR6 - Core plugs - front

Need help guys.
When the spare block was dipped & stripped, the shop replaced all the core plugs. On the front of the block there are three holes. One is for the camshaft and there are two others; one large and one small. The shop left the small one out but I seem to remember that this small one was the one with the rusty pinhole that allowed water into the sump. They put a plug in the larger hole. I can't remember if the other hole had a plug or not and the photos in the Haynes, Moss and TRF catalogs are not real clear in that area. I plan to put a new plug in the small hole and this appears more or less clearly in the above-mentioned photos. I can't see the larger hole. Does anybody have a pic of this done correctly or can you answer definitively? Sorry I do not have the plug sizes handy at present but can measure later today if further clarification is necessary. Also, if necessary I can take a pic later when we take the engine out of the stand to install the cam. Thanks.

Cheers,

Bob..

Let me know if you want me to pull the front cover off my spare engine. That will tell you what is what.

I rebuilt my engine but I don't remember much under that cover. I do recall one of the bolts actually protrudes into the water jacket of the block. I put a lot of sealer on that one. I think those other holes you're refering to are plugged but, again, let me know if I should pull the cover to confirm.

There are indeed two plugs required at the engine front plate/block interface. The large one is the same size as those on the RH side of the block under the manifolds. I haven't had an engine down for a while, but seem to recall the smaller one being about 2/3 the diameter of the large one.

Bob,

I pulled it off anyway. Those holes are definately plugged with core plugs. Looks like one of mine on my spare needs to be replaced. I'll be rebuilding that whole thing eventually...just for fun.

After having your block dipped make sure the front oil galley plug (the one that is flush and under your front cover/plate assembly) is still there. Some caustic dipping solvent can eat that away. I have heard of some people finding out the hard way after completely rebuilding and installing the engine. You may already be aware but just in case give it a good look to make sure it's still solid.

And I'm sure you know all about breaking in your cam, if new, with ZDDP in the oil.

By the way, since we have this new upload feature I can get you a picture of anything on my spare engine that you may need as reference. It's a fully assembled block that I'm slowly stripping. Now I have the front plate off.

Henry/Steve:
Thanks guys. I was pretty sure about the small plug that the shop left out but could not recall if the larger hole was plugged or not. I've read all the posts on ZDDP and will be taking extra care with the GP2 cam. Henry - thanks for the offer on the pics. All ok for now.
