Triumph TR6 - Fuel Costs

Curious whether the runup in fuel costs is affecting anyone's time in their TR cockpit. Mine's a daily driver and yesterday I broke the $30/tank mark. Ouch! Althoug I'll continue my daily required jaunts, the weekend optionals might be trimmed. BTW--we're in a 3-car, 1 motorcycle family and the weekly fuel bills are getting scary. How are the heavyweights (SUVs, PUs) making it?

So far the fuel cost has not affected my time in or my enjoyment of the TR. But I know what you mean about the burden on the family budget. Lukely my wife works from home a lot and my daily driver is diesel so I still get away with approx $35 every 2 wks, even with limited use the SUV is over $50 per wk. A Easter weekend trip to Montreal (800 miles) with the SUV cost $170 Canadian.

Until the TR is on the road, I am riding my bike (bicycle) three days a week to work. It is 30 miles each way. I refuse to pay $15 a day just to commute to work. The sub 15lb Cannondale makes it worth while.
Plus, I can eat whatever I want.

You lucky guys !!

To fill up my TR6 tank it costs me about 60 euro's, that is approx. $ 75,00 !!

Still smiling when driving my TR :)

Ouch! I haven't really computed the actual mileage per gallon since Clive rebuilt my motor, but I think it is going to be about twice what it was. The motor was blowing a lot of fuel past the pistons, and now it isn't. If I get up in the 20+ mpg, I'll be happy and it will seem like its cheaper to drive the TR6!

So, I can deceive myself, I guess.

My other car uses high test, which really costs a lot. My wife's SUV type car gets free gas--her family has a dealership up north, so she gets a new car every year and a credit card. My personal code of ethics prohibits me from using the dealership credit card for my cars.

Its gonna get worse!

Guys:

We've got the lock on bad gas prices in North America at least. $1.16 per liter for regular; that's $5.22 p/Gal Canadian. At 16 - 18 mpg with my tired old engine that's pricey but I figure 20 years of not having a TR entitles me to spend whatever it takes to enjoy it. The new engine rebuild continues and pics will be forthcoming. My buddy's Chevy Avalanche burns $90.00 every 2 days on his commute to work (his own business obviously) so hey, somebody's always got it worse. Life is short guys - we're gonna be dead a long, long time - enjoy it whatever it costs!

Cheers,

Rick-I feel your pain. Yes, we in the states are spoiled compared with most of the world, as far as gas prices. But our life style and geography of the country is centered on cheap&abundant fuel. Having said that, it does seem like the glory days of driving and the gas engine is riding into the sunset. At the risk of sounding like a negative old fart, over crowded highways, rude&agressive drivers, and high fuel costs have taken some of the enjoyment out of driving. Maybe being old enough to remember gas wars and less than $.20 gal. gas might have something to do with it. Yes, I know that wages were lower and adjusted for inflation, gas is still a bargin, but it doesn't ease the psychological pain.

"How are the heavyweights (SUVs, PUs) making it?"

I am hearing alot of whining from all of my SUV friends. I have an 03 Silverado crew cab with a 496ci and allison tranny = 7-8 mpg city.........needless to say my TR6 is going to get driven alot more this year!

I own a Nissan Titan ( 13-15 mpg) and with a 90 mile round trip to work it was killing me. It now sits in the garage and only used on weekends to pull a horse trailer. I bought a good used 92 Camry (30 mpg) for the commute which has helped considerably. I take the TR6 on nice days and I am glad I had an OD Trans done when it was rebuilt; it’s really helped with the highway driving.
