Triumph TR6 - Oil filter type

I have a oil filter spin on adaptor I purchase from Moss. I do not know what size of fliter for this spin adaptor.

Fram offers an excellent filter for this adaptor. It is FRAM Tough Guard # TG3600. Any auto supply will have or can get it. The nice thing about this filter is it has a Screen- over bypass valve. This valve will open during cold starts or if the filter is clogged...we know this will never happen though. It also has a Single-pass Efficiency (SPE) of 98%. It cost a little more than a standard filter but I think my baby is worth it.

Stephen: that site talks about exactly what the FRAM filter I recommended does(pressure relief valve). The interesting thing is the different first 2 letters. I am not sure about the PH.... designation but as I type I hold a FRAM TG3600 in my hand. I know TG stands for " Tough Guard". This info could be old reprint from the TVR. Maybe they have renamed the product. I wonder what the difference is.....anyone???

Assuming that the adaptor from Moss is the most common type, the Unipart filter number would be GFE148. That filter is the standard fitment for what was called the pendant (because it pointed down) filter on the later MGB. It seems like that filter is used from late 1973 and up. It replaced the previous spin filter that was oriented upside down. You removed the filter, oil followed gravity and made a mess. I remember it well as the original owner of a 1972 MGB.

I would suggest that you go to your local parts store and go through the intercahnge listing for Unipart to whoever's filter catalog you are looking in. Also check the Fram numbers above if the catalog is anything other than Fram, then go compare the numbers against those for, say a 1974 MGB.

I had the very problem that the spin on html talks about. I in fact went to my local part store and cross checked for a new one and when I installed it I couldn't get presure up above 28 lbs. I was dumd struck,I knew it had really strong presure the last time I started it. I did some digging on the web and found the above web site and said "whey", that saved a motor teardown,at least for 6 months

To all interested in this topic,
Steve, I went to the filter study page and then followed to another page. It seems like it is SLAM FRAM information. I do appreciate someone going to the time/effort/expense of doing a "mimi study". It has opened my eyes to filter "guts". His conclusion is simple as far as FRAM is concerned. DO NOT use the PH... or the DG... filters!! (Oh ya.. PH stands for Extra Guard..so now I know). In his conclusion he does have the TG... FRAM filter in his list of OK filters. 2 interesting points about this filter.
1. He states the TG filter has a better "filter media". He says this and does not say what it is. It is a "combination synthetic glass and cellulose media" (verbatum from the box).((Is he biassed against FRAM...I think so)).
2. My TG filter has the 8 (not 6 big) inlet holes and is stamped 2C.( Is it in total the same SQ IN of inlet area? Do the 8 smaler holes restrict oil flow)? This study was not done( and I appreciate why he did not).
This filter does have a very respectable SPE of 98%.
I am sending to FRAM e-mail to get there commment on the "cardboard end cap" statement. If it is cardboard..this bothers me. IF I get a response, I will post it here.

So what you are saying is to use the TG 3600 filter? I have not had mine running as it is going back together as we communicate,slowly I might add.

As far as FRAM is concerned as a choice of filter for our cars I would say yes (to the TG3600). Of the other choices of FRAM NO!!!NO!!!NO!!! I have purchased a small stock of TG3600 filters but have not used one as of yet ( my resoration was finished this past May and am on the filter that I bought locally). I have sent an e-mail to FRAM and await a reply ( if I get one). I questioned them on using cardboard for the end caps of the filter eliment. I must admit...this does concern me that they would use cardboard.Note: this is what I have read on the WWW, I have not personally taken one apart ( I am considering pulling one of mine apart).
I will let you know if I get a response.
Go back in this thread and go to the link filter study. Also go do a search on <<fram filters>>. Do not go to FRAMS web page but look for the one that a guy did on his motorcycle filter and FRAM. He definitely as nothing good to say about FRAM.
BOTTOM LINE: I think I will use the FRAM TG3600 filters I have.

All this chatter about spin on oil filters has made me feel guilty. Mine has leaked (slightly) for the past 2 years. Ever since I installed it. This is my only oil leak and I would like to fix it. Yes, I know where I'm going for that one. Does anyone have the address of the company that makes the adapter or know where I can get a new seal to go under the one I have installed.

use the ph3600 works fine. good pressure and a buck or two less than the tg3600. most owners don't let their oil or filter get filthy anyway. i change mine about every 2000 miles no longer.

TO JOE:
When I installed mine I remember that there was 2 "O" rings. One seemed to fit better than the other. I am going back a few years and my CRS ( can't remember sh*t) has prevented me from remembering the situation. Maybe Moss can supply one or remove the adaptor and see if u can gey one at an auto supply. ( Oh ya..if this is your only leek..consider yourself blessed)! My ONLY leek is the seals for the tranny front and back side where it mates with the OD. I am trying different products from LUCAS OIL to stop the leek ( funny I should be going to someone with that name to fix a problem with a British car). I have taked with a techi there and he gave me suggestions. An interesting point about their fuel treatment. It increases octane by a value of 2. All our little 6s where designed to run on 97 octane which is now considered racing fuel. Oh NO, have I started another debate?

P.S. Mitch, Thanx for joining in. It is great we can all have an opinion on a subject. I spent 3 years and a sizable amount of money restoring my 6 ( I am not braging..I am making a point). MY MISTRESS is worth the extra buck or two. There is a reason for the extra $s between a PH and TG FRAM filter. I am not looking at the money ( and I do not think you are either) I see it as a better product for my car that MIGHT give me longer engine life. Oh ya, I have put 500 miles on her since I did the restore and she will get an oil (and filter) change before she goes to bed for the winter. This will include one quart of LUCAS HD OIL STABILIZER at $18/quart. This stuff is GREAT and does what it claims to do.( to bad LUCAS doesn't make an oil filter:)
