Triumph TR6 - Starter Woes

Hi guys, I need your expertise. My car starts fine for 10 or so starts then there is nothing except the click of the relay on the inner fender. Sometimes repeated efforts cause the starter to engage and sometimes not. It wouldn't be a problem ,I guess, except my wife is getting really tired of having to come out so I can push start my car. Any suggestions you have for me to start investigating would be appreciated.

Check all battery connections first. That's battery to terminal & wire to terminal. Then check the battery ground strap.

Ron, first, suggest you become a member (no charge). I'm sure other members will suggest same. When you become a member, this will give you access to the archives. You will find archives on this subject. The symptoms you describe are very similar to what I experienced with mine. My problem was a worn out solenoid on the starter motor. You can pull the starter out and have it rebuilt at a resonable price. You can reach me at peterussell6atsympaticodotca if you wish.

Sounds like either a tired solenoid or a dead spot on your starter...next time it won't start try tapping the solenoid with a hammer a couple of times...no go ? then try the tapping the starter...or
With the ign on use an old screwdriver and short out the two connections on the solenoid.
Sounds like the starter will have to be rebuilt unless you find an loose connection at the batt or bolts.

Thanks for the advice, gentlemen. I , too, suspected the solenoid. It was rebuilt about 18 or so years ago. Must be time again. I found new solenoids at Victoria British. It seems like a great place to start. You will be pleased to see, Pete, that I am now a member and can access the archives. Thanks to Charlie for posting the pic of my Six on the members website. Ron

Ron,
With your car out of gear, run the red/white to your battery direct. If it starts its your solenoid, if not its your ignition wire. This advise via Dan the man Masters.
