Triumph TR6 - Stuck odometer?

Hey guys, how is everyone?

My 71 is running great since Clive's engine rebuild. Today, a new thing came up. The odometer is trying to turn to 80,000 and is stuck. The trip meter and the odometer both aren't moving--its at 79999, with the last 9 trying to turn over. The speedo still works fine.

Suggestions?

Thanks, John

Have you tried resetting the Trip odometer? I am sure you have. My odometers are off from each other by 5 10ths of a mile. The main miles one was hung up at a big number role over and resetting it helped it do the role over. It took a number of miles for all the digits to "fully" role over.

Been there, seen that !
My odometer got also stuck at 80.000 miles. I think moving 5 digits is too much to ask. In my case the tripmeter also had to go to 200 miles , so 8 digit had to be moved. How much can you asked from an English 35 year old gauge :)
I took the glas of the speedo and manually turned the digits a bit further. No problems since.

Tried resetting and messing with the trip odometer. This morning, it is trying ever so slowly to go from 79999 to 80000. I'm about 2/3's of the way down the last few 9's.

I think I'll give it a few more miles and see what gives. My guess is that it has been stuck for about 30 miles so far.

Actually, though, I could pull all the instruments out and clean them up a bit. But I hate to mess with stuff when the car is running so nice and the weather is good.

Thanks, John.

If it is not clicking the miles over at all then Eric possibly/hopefully has your fix. Is it clicking the trip odometer over?
Rick
Rick Crawford

No Rick, the trip odometer isn't turning over either. Although now my last 9 is about 2/3's gone and about 1/2 of the 1st 8 is showing! I guess I'm getting free miles.

Sounds to me like a lubrication problem. Get a new cable, or two, and that should solve your problem. Also check your angle drive connection at the transmission.

on the tr cd is a guide to repairing smiths gauges, in it you will find a section on the odemeter and repairs/oiling etc...do you need a copy of the document?

John's speedo is working. It is just the 2 odometers that are not working.
(are you sure the Doc did not put that new lens in backwards:)
I think Eric hit the nail on the head. "I think moving 5 digits is too much to ask."
There must be mechanical gearing. I wounder if you are doing damage to the gears in particular the 1/10 gear of the trip odometer. Now that I think about it, it is probably only the 1/10 gear that could be getting damaged.....one tooth getting worn down???

Doug- By Ricks diagnosis it sounds like your speedo needs a dentist.

Don, Rick,
Y'all just have too much time on your hands. Why don't y'all jouney on out to the garage and go "
Varoom, Varoom a few times??:)

Don, it's John Bryan's Speedo, not mine. I suggest checking the short cable connecting the odometer and the speedometer (if its an early model with this cable). Sounds to me like an interference issue, but may indeed be other mechanical such as worn gears.

As Bob Craske pointed out, Rick and I put the Instrument Repair manual on cd 1, so knock yourself out John. You can tear that sucker all the way down to it's itty-bitty parts and fix it all...or you could send it off to be overhauled at about $85.00 USD. I think I included the vendor for repair on cd 1 in the folder entitled Supply Sources or some such. Don't remember now. Still think it's probably lubrication!!

there is a place in New Mexico that can supply you the parts for the odometer...Mo Ma, albeq8uerqi NM, ask for Margaret at 505 766 6661. They have all kinds of parts at great prices and if you want, you can send them the speedo and they can repair and re-calibrate the intsrament at the same time.

For others on the BBS, they steered me to a small shop in Toronto (north York) which offer instrament repairs/replacements..i got a NEW speedo still in a smiths box from them!

I presume you have CDII
Go to: Procedures/engine/tuning/SmithSpeedoRepair.pdf.

I even keep finding stuff on the CD.
