Triumph TR6 - too hot to trot

Hey guys; Beautiful day today. Tooling along Pacific Coast Highway. Quite hot really. Not usually problem for my 72 TR-6. Starts rinning very hot. 190 up. In town in traffic up to 230. Does this sound like a jammed up thermostat or something more serious? Oil and coolant right where they belong. All belts secure.

I would check on a plugged radiator. How old is the engine, maybe plugged passages

Stuck thermostat, plugged radiator or wobbly water pump. Start with the easiest and work your way to the hardest. If we didn’t like this kind of stuff we wouldn’t them? I guess.

The engine is fairly recently rebuilt. I didn't do it but I have to assume they cleaned the water jacket. Like you saidCurt. I'll start with a new thermostat and go from there. Like you say, if we didn't like this stuff we'd drive rice burners. I do worry about damaging my second favorite thing(my car)though.

joel,
I think i know your problem, I have a strong feeling your heater valve is stuck. Try pulling your heater knob all the way out and open up your hood to see if the cable is moving the arm on the heater valve to half postion in its stroke range. If the heater valve lever is to far forward towards the closed postion with your heater knob pulled all the way out your cable is out of adjustment. Its a simple fix that wont cost you a cent. Check into this and get back to me. Mike.

Mike; I did find the problem. The PO had put the temp gauge off a 75 or later car in. Then when it seemed to run hot he installed a 160 degree thermostat. I suspected something fishy when the car didn't seem to be as overheated as the gauge indicated. Replaced gauge with the proper unit, put in 180 degree thermo and all seems well. Very strange car. PO also installed wiring harness off later car. The flasher unit is supposed to be two prong on a 72 but mine has the three prong of the later cars. Oh well. Will double check the heater valve though. Thanks for the help.
