Triumph TR6 - Where do they go?

I actually have 2 questions as to location of parts. I have just finished a full body off restoration and since I have put on 2 new front wings.....
1. The rubber hood buffers on the side of the inner fenders. It looks like the back 2 go at a raised part on the fender inside (true?). A measurement from the hood locating pin forward would help..thanx.
2. This one is a little more difficult as it is ONLY for a 1971 TR6. This year was the only year that 2 rectangular reflectors where installed below the rear tail lights. Location measurements please. I have the reflectors but do not have the rubber mounting gasket. Are they tappered?...would it be easy to make up 2 from a piece of rubber?
Than you in advance for any and all help.

Location, location, location (starting to sound like real estate)

1) On my TR6 the side buffers when measured back from the forward edge of the fender/wing mounting flange behind the headlamp bucket have their respective forward edges at approximately 4 1/2" and 44 1/2". From the bonnet locating pin, the forward edge of the rear side buffer is approximately 5 3/4". I prefer using the leading edge of the flange since you can hook the end of your tape measure to it.

If you are reusing your old fenders, you should have two small screw holes at each pad location. They mount up right along the inside edge of the fender/wing so that they rub the side flange of the bonnet.

2) The reflector rubber mounts have a 3-D surface in that they are tapered from both top to bottom and side to side. They can be made from a hard rubber, but you will have to work at it a while, maybe even use some sort of a milling type of fixture to rough cut, then hand work the balance. The reflectors when mounted to the car should be in parallel with a flat rear plane of the car and perpendicular to the the ground. I got lucky and found some used ones at Atlanta Imported Auto Parts (www.atlbritishautopasts.com) several years ago. At the time they had a box full of them. It has been several years and they have moved since that time so I do not know if they ave any of those items today.

The location of the lower mounted reflector is slightly off centered about the the reflector portion of the red stop/tail lamp lens. The outer edge of the lower mounted reflector/inner edge of the chrome trim ring for it should line up along the inner edge of the reflector portion of the stop/tail lens, with more overlap to the turn signal lens. This was based upon the existing holes on the rear panel of my 1971 TR6.

Sort of a trick question on most TR6s as that second lower reflector was used only for 1971. I have yet see them documented in any catalogue, but I know from memory of the cars from when they were new that these reflectors were on the 1971's. The reflectors and chrome trim rings themselves are the same as the rear side marker reflectors used for the 1969 MGB and MGC.

Hope all of this helps.

Hay..thanx Steve
I put on 2 new front wings that is why I did not know their location on my piece of real estate. I have bought 4 new buffers ( have 2 old so know they have a slot screw with cup washer). One question for you (or anyone else if intersted) OK so i now know where they go...do they mount flat onto the flange that bolts the wing to the inner fender or are they raised slightly?
Yup you are right it is a trick question re the reflectors. I figured they where tapered in both planes. It will be difficult to reproduce in rubber...maybe in wood first as it is easier to sand and file to get a template shape. The wierd thing Steve is my 1971 did not have holes for the mounting screws ( again why I asked the question as to location). I know she is '71 from the commission # plate. (May 1971, CC65060L ).. I agree there is not a lot of documentation on this fact of " only on 1971 vehicles" and yes you do not see them available in any parts catalogue. I am sure the ones I picked up at a swap meet where from an MGB.
Thanx again for your help Steve

The side buffers for the bonnet are mounted such that the lower edge of the buffer is raised about 1/4" above the flange.

On the reflectors, it is possible that your car may not have had them based upon the build date. You have rather late 1971. It could be that it was decided that they would no longer be fitted after some certain point and that was the end of it. I remember hearing various stories on those. They always went along the same lines of some governmental regulations said that there had to be so many square inches of unlighted rear reflector fitted to cars and those additional reflectors got them there, but then the rule was rescinded/changed/the required surface area reduced, etc., and of course, depending on when and how it was heard it was the USA, it was the EU, it was the TUV, etc. No matter how they got there, it is not really documented as near as I can tell.

It may still be worth your while if you want some of the reflector plinthes to contact Atlanta Imported. Either that or I'll can check with them next time I am over that way. E-mail me off this board if you would like me to check. You never know, they just might have some of the little beasties still sitting around.

Thank you Don and Steve
Steve: Knowing the Brits and how they did things you are probably correct that mine did not have the reflectors on her. The first '70 was built Nov 22 '69 ( interestingly I do not see in any book I have a seperation of 70 and 71 years) CC5000IL. The last '71 was built Aug '71 CC67893L. So yes, I am closer to the end of the build in both time and commission number ( I am talking Carb cars not PI). With this in mind, I am undecided as to putting them on. I again thank you both for the info.
Best regards
