Triumph TR6 - Where is Fred

I am trying to locate Fred McEachern formerly of BAS British Auto Sport (near Toronto). I understand his business has moved to another location and I am temporarily without a local supplier for my 6.

E-mail, phone or address would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

No worries lad...Fred is still out there. Same Toll Free phone number (888)485-2277
He now is out on a farm, Troy ON. Somewhere on Hwy 5.
Just placed order with him and he sent it special post. Ordered it at 2:00PM and had it next day at 10:00AM down at my post office box......$6.75 postal cost. Good service.

I am not too happy with CDN suppliers. As we all know the CDN and US $ are almost par.

Fred's price an all three parts I ordered was almost double the price of a US supplier in Detroit. An Example MOSS PN 696-025 In Canada $3.00 +GST/PST=$3.45...at LBcarCO $1.66x exchange ($1.103)= $CDN 1.83.

Before you buy major stuff, take a good look at the US suppliers.

I hate to point this out but HAY! twice the price???

Canadian Owners:

Folks, listen to Rick 'cause he speaks the truth. I have been buying parts for the last two years from the big two US suppliers cheaper than I can get them in from Canadian sources. There are of course some exceptions but mostly everything is cheaper. I have found Len Drake of Drake's British Motors in Kelowna, BC to be very competitive as he is a Moss distributor whose prices are very good, even compared to what our US friends have to pay. I hate to dump on our big Canadian supplier in Point Edward, Ontario but their prices are sometimes ballistic. Their service is good but it ought to be for the profit they make.

Cheers,

I have steered many folks to Len Drake because of the fair exchange and he will pass his MOSS volume discounts on to you too!..so far the only fair deal in Canada

I've been very happy with Jeff @ Little British Car Co...on most parts he brings them across the border and ships from Canada to save costs
He's always cheaper than most..I'll check out Drakes next time though

Hi all,

heres another possibility,

I have a PO address at a distribution warehouse in Buffalo, call CBIUSA, (www.CBIUSA dot com). They will recieve any part that can fit in a roll up door for a bout 8 bucks canadian.
I will be happy to discuss this option with anyone interested.
There is no time limit as to how long they will hold onto a part. It is literally 5 minutes over the border. I have items shipped there, and make it an excuse to go down for some chicken wings. I drive down about once a month, and have picked up a few parts for others.

Your only other option is to have the US distributors ship to you in Canada, but IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOT USE CURRIER COMPANIES. Use good old U.S. Parcel post instead. The currier companies charge a rape fee they call brokerage to get the parcel through customs. If you use parcel post, there is a 5 dollar fee by Canada post to get it over the border. Much more reasonable. And many of the US distributors do a lot of shipping to Canada and are happy to work with you.

Two of the parts places in particular that have been very good with me are Wishbone classics (Kai Radicke, but dont let his limited website fool you, he has anything you will need, and he specializes in performance, if you are so inclined), and the other is British parts Northwest, althought I have found their web site to be difficult to log onto.

I agree with the comments of others, it is important to give your local supplier business to keep them employed, but when price differences can be as much as double or more, maybe they need to be in the condom business as well.

Hope this helps,

regards,

I concur with KJ. I have found the same thing. Use US Post not UPS or any courier company if at all possible. The post office charges $8 now I think since my son just received a package from the US and was charged $8. Used to be $5. UPS charges around $40 for brokerage fees. I believe there are limitations on package size though taht can go US post

My threshold was $150-200 in parts when the exchange rate was 20% or more. What this means is that if I order less than $150 it was generally cheaper to order in Canada due to freight and brokerage fees. If between $150 and 200 it may be equivalent. If above $200 it was always cheaper to order from the US Suppliers. Now that the exchange rate is 10% I suspect the threshold is less.

I try to keep the orders Canadian if there is only a slight premium since I do get same day or overnight service whereas US orders are 1-2 weeks or more at times.

KJ, I may take you up on your offer on my next order.I am just north of Oakville and can meet you on your way back.My e-mail is shown below if you can contact me to give me your contact information. To protect me fom unsolicited e-mails I have coded it as Rick Crawford does.
